In 1915 Elmer Fenton built a rancho (farm) northeast of today’s central business district in what would become known as Rancho Cucamonga; he donated land for a public school which opened in 1921 and served as the nucleus for today’s elementary school system called Corona del Mar HS and Chula Vista HS both serving students from laMirada through Imperial Beach until they merged into one campus in 1984 following Proposition 187 which repealed state education funding for nonresidential public schools outside Los Angeles County). A post office called Lira was established at Torrey Pines on December 12th 1916 by James White Marshall under US Mail Order No 2187 (it closed on July 15th 1918 due to lack of postage stamps).
