La Mirada, California is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley region of Southern California. It was founded by Mexican American settlers in 1881, and became part of the United States after Californias admission to the Union in 1850. The town had a population of about 2,000 people as of 2010. La Mirada is located on the border between Los Angeles County and Orange County. The first residents of what would become LaMirada wereMexican Americans who had been transported to America from Mexico during the Mexican–American War. They arrived at what is now known as Rancho Cucamonga on December 12, 1881. In 1882, they organized themselves into a society called "Hacienda La Esperanza" to purchase land east of Mission Boulevard and west of Ventura Boulevard for $1 an acre (0.50 ha). By 1890, there were over 100 families living in La Mirada with an enrollment of 550 students in grades one through twelve at both San Fernando High School and Ysleta College Preparatory School (now San Fernando Valley State University). The towns growth was due not only to its location but also to its timber-based economy – which allowed for shipbuilding and other heavy manufacturing operations that kept the town busy until recently. In 1907, La Mirada incorporated as a city under state law 10362 which granted it city status without giving it any special rights or privileges such as representation in government or local taxation; however, because it hosted no municipal services other than janitorial work, it continued to rely on property taxes from citizens within its borders even while being considered an unincorporated community outside those boundaries. As time passed and more people moved into LaMirada from surrounding communities such as Carson City or Porterville; school board members began discussions about creating a consolidated school district for all residents of la miradans whether they wanted full city status or not because there was simply too much variety among individual schools within la miraderas boundaries (some providing excellent education while others did not). After two years long discussion led by then Superintendent Manuel Ruiz; members voted 5-4 to form a consolidated school district with three elementary schools (Lincoln Elementary School; Chavez Elementary School; and Santa Anita Middle/High School) along with Mrs. Elizabeth Flores’s Spanish Immersion Academy serving grades K-8th .
