The United States Air Force (USAF) has a long and proud history of gifting air-to-ground equipment to its allies. On July 5, 1944 the United States Air Force gifted its first jet bomber, the P-47 Thunderbolt, to the Royal Air Force. The RAF used it for operations over Europe during World War II.
La Palma is an island located in the Pacific Ocean, about 120 miles west of San Diego and 25 miles south of the Mexican mainland. It was first settled by Native Americans in prehistoric times. The Spanish were the first Europeans to visit La Palma, land that they named Santa Isabella after their Catholic saint. In 1770, Governor Felipe de Neve granted Rancho La Palma to Fernando Rivera y Costilla, a rich Spaniard with interests in mining and cattle farming. The heirs of Rivera y Costilla developed some of the most important rancho holdings on La Palma including Los Cerritos (now known as Rancho Bernardo) and San Miguel. The U.S. Navy built a naval station on La Palma from 1909-1912 during World War I as part of its strategic goal of maintaining access to the Pacific ocean for American forces fighting against Germany at Verdun. The Naval Station was closed following World War II but it is now open as a museum which includes exhibits on both Navy and Marine life during that time period. In 1951, when California became an state, La Palma became part of the new state and it has remained one of its most popular tourist destinations ever since despite having no elected government or legislative bodyof its own apart from county councils whose powers are limited to matters such as fire protection and zoning regulations
The town of La Palma was founded in 1879 by Juan Bautista La Palma and his family. The town grew rapidly, and by 1903 had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1969, the town was annexed by California.
