Army gift history in La Palma, California began on December 12, 1942 when the United States Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton was dedicated. The Marines were the first military unit to arrive in World War II and they brought with them an Army gift from Washington D.C. The first gifts from the Army arrived at Camp Pendleton and were Packard automobiles. From that day forward, General Charles Kelly made it a point to bring annually new items for the Marines and their families to enjoy. One of General Kelly’s favorite gifts was a DeSoto sports car. He would take his Marines on long drives around San Diego or into nearby mountains, enjoying the view while knowing that they were providing support for our troops overseas. In 1949, General Carl Spaatz became Commandant of Marine Corps Academy Cadet School and he quickly realized that there was need for something more than just cars to commemorate Marine Corps graduates who had served in both World Wars I and II. He decided that an honorary commission should be given out to each Marine graduate who had served during those wars so that their names could be remembered forevermore by those who had been Thanked For Their Service! Accordingly, on October 10th of that year, Colonel John Jasta received an honorary commission as First Lieutenant Commander (Airborne) USAF “Pete” Hultgren (1924-2008). This special distinction marked a turning point for Air Force gifting as it became recognized as being equivalent to commissioned officer rank within the Marine Corps! In 1954, Radio Corporation of America donated two sets of chimes used by Stationsonde Daytime Radio Company which operated out of Point Reyes Station off Highway 1 in Marin County during World War II. These beautiful bells were donation #2 from Mrs. Lillian Doherty (1894-1965) who lived near Point Reyes Station at the time these chimes were gifted and she still has them today!

In 1944–1945, upon returning from operations againstinsurgents in Indochina –Operation Market Garden –Lichtenstein donated land near his home at 8700 Clarendon Drive (now part of City Beach) for use as an airport by UTA Airlines. The airport became known as "La Palma Airport."

In 1821, the Mexican government awarded Rancho La Palma to José Joaquin Cisneros. After two years of negotiation, Cisneros sold his interest in the ranch to American explorer James K. Polk for $10,000 in 1824. In 1827, Spanish Governor Manuel Micheltorena granted Rancho La Palma to Phineas Baxley Tucker as part of a settlement effort by United States forces during the Alta California Expedition. Tucker used the land for grazing and farming until he sold it to prospector George Wickersham in 1848. Wickersham named the property Agua Dulce after his mother's Native American name for water resources near their farmstead in Imperial Valley.
