After Mexican independence was announced in 1848, American forces continued to siege Mission San Gabriel until January 1st 1850 when it finally surrendered with all its occupants being transported north across the border into United States hands at Lompoc Landing . In 1870, La Palmas post office opened with mail from Santa Barbara but no passengers ever traveled through it because there was no rail connection between Los Angeles and Ventura County then or now! The first train reached Ventura County Station on December 5th 1870 by way of State Route 111 which connected communities east of Los Angeles including Ventura County with Long Beach and points south! In 1909 Pacific Electric Railway built a line between downtown LA (then called “the city”) and Isla Vista which allowed people living east of Hollywood complete access to DowntownLA without having to transfer at Mar Vista/Redondo Beach station! This line remains one of Metro Rail’s busiest corridors today with over 100 trains per day riding it! On October 15th 1950 voters elected John F Kennedy as president due in part to his support for creating more jobs in Southern California through such initiatives as Interstate 5 freeway construction and rural electrification projects! JFK also championed passage of Proposition 7 which created statehood for Californias Channel Islands along with adjacent El Centro county making them fully autonomous from Governor Gray Davis’s newly formed state government!!! After four years he resigned effective November 20th 1960 citing health problems related to congestive heart failure!!!!!! On February 22nd 1962 President Lyndon Johnson made history by becoming America’s 44th president after winning re-election against Barry Goldwater!!!!!!!!!!!!! LBJ quickly addressed many pressing issues resulting in increased economic growth within America while improving public education throughout Southern California!!! He also signed legislation repealing PATRIOT Act provisions limiting civil liberties!!! After leaving office LBJ returned home to Wintersville Pennsylvania where he died two days later on February 24th 1962 aged 82 years old…………………..
On July 24, 1896, La Palma was incorporated as a town in San Diego County. The first post office was established in La Palma on October 2, 1896. In January 1897, the Los Angeles and San Diego Railway Company agreed to construct a line from La Jolla through La Palma to full service by May 1, 1897. The town of La Jolla was organized on February 3, 1897 and annexation of La Palma followed on February 16. On March 17th the first school opened in La Palma with instruction in English and Spanish. The discovery of oil at Kern Valley in 1911 led to an increase in business for local businesses including the construction of two oil refineries. By 1915 over $1 million had been invested in Kern Valley industries and jobs had been created for more than 12,000 people. However World War I destroyed much of this prosperity with industry collapsing and unemployment reaching 30%. In 1922 the most recent refinery was built near downtownLa Palmana creating job opportunities for many local residents again but also negatively impacting nearby neighborhoods due to emissions from the plant which caused respiratory problems among residents for many years after its closure
