The Coast Guard Station La Palma is the oldest continuously operating coast guard station in California. The present-day Coast Guard Station was established on January 1, 1907 as a result of the state's becoming a republic. The original location for the station was on Point San Pedro, about two miles from the entrance to La Jolla Cove on the southern tip of San Diego County. In 1912, a new Headquarters and Administrative Building was built at what is now known as North Park Boulevard. In 1928, additional buildings were erected at East Beach Road and South Harbor Drive in south La Jolla. In 1939, an addition to the north side of the original Headquarters building was built including a Shop and Services Area for Storekeepers and Boaters. On October 5, 1941, when World War II began, naval troops arrived at Point Loma to support Marines engaged in amphibious operations against Japanese forces ashore in California. As part of this operation, four Coast Guard cutters were stationed at La Palma: CG-5 "Argus" (formerly HMCS Cornwallis), CG-6 "Falcon" (formerly HMCS Protector), CG-7 "Hercules" (formerly USCGC Saint John) and CG-8 "Perseverance". On December 8th 1942 those Cutters came under Commander Harry Carney who directed their movements during that weeks fighting off enemy submarines which had been stalking various coasts along America's eastern seaboard with relative impunity due to lack of anti submarine warfare capability by our Allies. During World War II there were also two Marine Barracks located on Point Loma: one manned by Marines until 1945 while another barracks housed Naval Air Squadron One hundred F4U Corsairs which operated from 1941 to 1945 based out of Rota airfield Spain until they were replaced by Marine Fighter Attack Squadron VF-14 “Plymouth” flying Lockheed P2V Neptune fighters from 1943 until their conversion into squadron status in late 1944; these aircraft flew missions over Nazi Germany during Operation Crossroads which saw American forces invade Europe successfully July 15th 1944 followed by months long combat against RAF Bomber Command raids against German targets throughout September/October 1944; all flights stopped just short of Hamburg Airport Germany due to bad weather conditions en route; finally ending with Okinawa Burma campaign March 9th 1945 when Japan capitulated After World War II ended General Electric Corporation leased land adjacent to Point Loma for use as an experimental airport that became known as Edwards Airport after Colonel Edwin H. Edwards who served as Director of Aeronautics during WWI and WWII buildup period

The new pier allowed for more than 12 million passengers per year to access LA Harbor during its heyday; however this increased traffic also caused problems such as large amounts of sand buildup at high tide which created dangerous wakes while sailing at low tide or when docking ships at the marina

However, during the American Civil War (1861-1865),La Palma came under attack by Confederate forces who built artillery batteries on its hillsides. After several months of intense fighting, the Confederates were driven off and no damage was done to either side.
