In 1802, Don Manuel de la Palma y Costilla purchased the Rancho La Palma from José Antonio Moraga. The land included much of what is now La Palma and other adjacent communities in southern San Diego County. In 1821, La Palma was platted as a town with its own government. The Moraga family had been prominent Mexican landowners in the area for years before they sold off their land to the Mexican government in 1821. After independence came about, many of these lands were re-allocated to various groups as part oflettlemental compensation for ancestral land ownership claims by Mexicans living east of the international border. In 1865, John Mita bought 8,000 acres (3 km²) of Rancho La Palma from Don Manuel de la Palma y Costilla. Mita was a wealthy Anglo American who had invested in citrus farming near Santa Ana and built a large citrus orchard there. He also developed some small retail businesses inLa PalmamayoractuallyownedtheRanchoLaPalmasuchastoryandataresortuntilhis deathin1972. Mita's heirs leased or sold portions of the ranch until it became part of the public domain following his death. In 1978, after more than 50 years on private hands, California State Lands Commissioner Don Perrott assigned it to the Department of Parks and Recreation as part of a larger parcel acquired by state government from Trustees for Our Angeles National Park
