The community was founded in 1853 by Don José Antonio de la Vega and his wife María del Carmen Yuma. The first Europeans to visit La Palma were Diego Rivera and Fray Francisco de Paula Castro who surveyed the area in 1821-22. In 1846, when Mexico became an empire under Emperor Agustín de Isla y San Martín, La Palma came under Spanish rule as part of Tlaxcala Province. In 1863, after France captured Tlatelolco during the Mexican Revolution, Emperor Maximilian I ordered General Gonzalo Mejia to take control of Tlatelolco and its surroundings including La Palma. On May 25th of that year, General Mejia arrived at Los Ritos near La Mesa with 1,500 soldiers to occupy the town without consulting anyone or writing any orders. He evicted all civilian inhabitants from their homes without due process or trial and installed his own military commanders in their place On October 10th of that year, while Mostallones was still subject to general Mejia's authority Don José Antonio De la Vega reported seeing an unknown body floating on the ocean northwest of Los Ritos which he thought could be a French sailor lost overboard but it soon proved to be another Spanish war vessel HMS Cervera which had come up for provisions off Los Ritos en route from Acapulco

La Palma is a city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. The population was 59,523 at the 2010 census. La Palma is located on the Pacific Ocean and is bordered by San Marino to the north, Harbor City to the east and south, and Playa del Carmen to the west. It lies about 25 miles (40 km) northeast of downtown Los Angeles. The first people to live here were Native Americans who hunted animals along what became known as "The Promontory" on La Jolla's Point Loma. The area now called La Palma was also home to some Mission Indians before they were relocated elsewhere in 1821 following an Indian war fought over land rights. The town site was bought from Alcalde Francisco de la Rúa by José María Narváez in 1834 for $1,500. La Palma's development began with its incorporation as a municipality on December 12 of that year. During World War II La Palma played host to three-quarters of all U.S., Japanese and Filipino troops stationed in Southern California during Operation Husky because it offered a secure location with little potential for interception or attack by Nazi Germany or Japan should they attempt an amphibious assault within striking distance of Los Angeles or Orange County beaches
The first Europeans to explore La Palma were the Spanish in 1769, and they named it Isla de la Palma. The English called it Islay. In 1802, Don José Francisco de la Vega y Aguirre explored and claimed La Palma for Spain. He built a small fort on the island in 1803 and named it San Miguel de las Casas after Saint Michael the Archangel. In 1863, while fighting off U.S. forces at Tenerife, Admiral Antonio López de Santa Anna lost his left arm below the elbow due to a grenade detonating prematurely during an engagement with American warships USS Constitution and USS Maryland. Lt. Cmdr John Rodgers of USS Constitution volunteered to amputate the admiral's arm at sea so that he could continuecommanding his ship despite being disabled from the attack. Aboard USS Constitution, Rodgers successfully completed the surgery (the first successful operation on an American naval vessel) in under twenty minutes using a simple metal scalpel that had been brought aboard ship by one of his officers as backup intended only for use aboard HMS Mactan which was serving as hospital ship for wounded Confederate prisoners of war López de Santa Anna was so impressed by Rodgers' bravery that he ordered him to continue commanding even though his arm was now useless. When America's Union blockade forced Spain into bankruptcy in 1868, La Palma became part of United States Navy domain and reverted back to Spanish hands In 1898, following victory over Spanish forces at El Centenario Battlefield near Santiago del Estero, Mexico gained possession of La Palma when Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo allowed Mexican nationals living on Guam and Puerto Rico to become U.S citizens without losing their Cuban citizenship On July 12th 1912 Mexican President Arturo Frondizi approved Act No 527 legalizing land grants totalling 192 square miles (533 km²) east of Isla Grande about two-thirds of present-day La Palma because this area lay within boundaries set forth by Captain Cook during his time aboard HMS Resolution when mapping out Los Cabos Peninsula The new owners were General Agustín Torres Canosa who founded Villa Hermosa; Manuel Ramos Pacheco who founded Rancho Las Brisas; Emilio Castilla y Valdez who founded Rancho Atalaya; Jesús Sánchez Carrillo who bought Villa San Martín from Pedro Fernándezdez Girona; Ramón Pujol García who took over Rancho Tacuba; Vicente Ramos Roque created Playa del Carmen or Camino Real beachfront property adjacent to what is now known as Punta Cana Airport . On October 30th 1928 Torres Canosa sold Villa Hermosa Estate including its then 4 uninhabited acres surrounding Playa del Carmen Municipal Water Supply Area (now known as Punta Cana International Airport), comprising approximately 96 sq mi (.311 km²) today’s eastern end of Anacapa Parish east between Cruz Bay and Dragone Naval Base Punta Cana Airport currently stands on lands once belonging to Villa Hermosa Estate . The airport has been developed into one main international airport serving both Punta Cana Municipality Governmentally Administered Territory (formerly Anacapa Parish), most notably with passenger terminals served by Air Dominico Airlines, Virgin Atlantic Airways US Airways US Airways Express , LAN Airlines Dominicana Dominican Republic Airlines Asiana Airlines All Nippon Airways Japan Airlines Philippines Pacific Jet China Eastern Skyway
