La Palma, California is a city in southern California on the island of Palma de Mallorca. The original inhabitants of La Palma were the Tohono O'odham people. Spanish missionaries first arrived in 1769 and founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on the present-day downtown area of La Palma. In 1821, Mexico gained independence from Spain, and as a result, La Palma became part of Mexican Cádiz Province. In 1848, during the Mexican Revolution, General Antonio Lopez Portillo besieged and captured La Palma; however, he was then forced to retreat after his troops ran out of ammunition. After the revolution ended in 1849, Mexico ceded La Palmana to Great Britain as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. On July 12, 1850, at 8:00 A.M., Los Angeles was founded as a port town on Point Conception by Commodore John D’Artagnan with 1st Lieutenant George Fife Rights aboard USS Discovery (1807). As part of the Treaty Of Paris following the American Civil War (1861-1865), both sides agreed to end hostilities and return all property seized during the war including La Palma which British military commanders had assumed control over while Americans were away fighting in 1861-1865. The post office at Point Conception opened on November 7th 1840 under name "Hacienda Real". The first postmaster was José Ramón López who served until January 3rd 1841 when Juan Ponce de León took office In 1863 Captain Don Joaquín Hurtado organized a volunteer battalion called Los Angeles Battalion to help protect American shipping entering through Vera Cruz harbor Captain Don Joaquín Hurtado served until 1865 when he resigned due to illness On October 5th 1865 Captain Don Juana Maturana relieved captain Don Joaquin Hurtado Los Angeles County was organized on December 4th 1870 Don Juana Maturana served until May 15th 1888 when she resigned due to health problems
The first English settlement in what is now La Palma, California was made by the Rev. John Culp on December 21, 1769. The town was named for Jean-Baptiste La Palma, a French military officer and explorer who had visited the area in 1768. The first permanent European residents were Spanish soldiers who founded San Pedro de la Laguna on May 5, 1777. A more significant development took place when Captain José María Narváez and his men discovered oil wells at Yerba Buena on November 8, 1821. On November 10, 1824, Narváez named the offshore island of La Jolla after his discovery. After years of exploration and development, San Diego COUNTY was created on January 6, 1912 from parts of El Dorado County and San Bernardino County.
