In La Palma, California, Marines have deployed gift history dating back to World War II. Marine Corps Recruit Depot battalion 2 (MCREB2) was activated at Camp Pendleton on Dec. 12, 1942 and served as a training center for new Marines until May 1945. In that time, it also served as the headquarters of Marine Barracks Battalion 1 and the Marine Air Transport Service detachment 3. From July 1945 untilactivated inactivation on Sept. 15, 1946 MCREB2 was located at Quantico Naval Base before being moved to San Diego on Oct. 9th 1946 and decommissioned there on Nov. 20th 1946.
Laguna Beach, California, is a beautiful town located on the coast of Orange County. The population of Laguna Beach was 24,711 in 2010. La Palma is a census-designated place (CDP) in Orange County and it has a population of 14,577 as of 2014. Laguna Beach features many interesting attractions including two amusement park complexes - Kings Canyon Park and Six Flags Magic Mountain - as well as several small towns that straddle the beach. One such small town is La Mesa which lies just east of Laguna Beach and shares its ZIP code with the rest of La Palma. The history of Laguna Beach goes back to 1887 when Spanish settlers discovered land that would eventually become Laguna Beach. At first they named their new settlement "Los Angeles de la Reina" after Queen Victoria's home country Spain. However, Spanish colonists quickly realized that this location would never be suitable for their growing community because it was too close to Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico - one of California's most important churches and also home to some very influential people at the time! In 1912, local developer Edward Leland bought 640 acres from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $2 per acre ($40 million today). He renamed his development "La Palma" after then-Governor Manuel Avila Cámpora who had donated the land adjacent to Mission San Gabriel Arcangelico in 1911. Leland built what is now known as Rancho La Palma into one of southern California's most prosperous agricultural communities during the 1920s and 1930s due to his expertise in irrigation systems and his investments in large-scale farming projects such as cattle ranching, citrus groves, rice fields and plantations. The area now known as La Mesa became part of Laguna Beach when it was annexed by Laguna Niguel in 1952 following the passage of Proposition 13 (the so-called " LA Bill ", which limited property taxes).

La Palma is a small island located in the Pacific Ocean about 75 miles (120 km) southeast of Los Angeles and about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of San Diego. The island was first inhabited by the Tongva people, who were displaced by the arrival of Spanish settlers in 1769. La Palma was granted to Spain in 1821 as part of Rancho Santa Fe. The United States annexed La Palma on December 19, 1898, following the Spanish–American War. In 1912, La Palma became a city under Mexican sovereignty and was renamed Ciudad Juárez after Mexico's president, Porfirio Díaz. On November 20, 1920, La Palma became an independent republic within California and was named Ciudad de las Artes after its namesake City of Arts and Sciences. On May 15, 1932, it became a city again and was renamed La Habana with the same name as Cuba's Havana. The island has been occupied by numerous different cultures over time including Mexicans, Asians (most notably Japanese), Europeans (chiefly English), Americans (chiefly Californians), East Indians (Athabascans), Japoneses/Americans-turned-Rancheros etc.] The first European sighting of La Palma occurred on October 14，1769 when Spanish ships arrived off the coast of present day La Paloma Island looking for land that could be used for grazing purposes. A few days later some natives beachcombed upon the shipwrecked survivors from Admiral Ferreira’s expedition which had also found new land just east of Malibu Coast but did not develop it because there were no resources to be discovered there. After this initial encounter no more vessels ventured ashore until 1821 when Captain José Joaquín de Arguelles sailed into what is now known as Point Conception due to evidence left behind by Ferreira’s expedition some years earlier.* Arguelles sighted rocks atoll measuring about 120 feet wide x 50 feet deep x 10 feet high lying between two longitude lines he had drawn himself.* He named it Isla de la Cruz or Isla de la Vaca because he thought it resembled a crossroads or “calvario” ([a hunting ground] where wild animals could be killed].* In 1825 Captain Fernando Alvarado landed his ship at Isla de la Cruz while exploring southwest California for new land grants: Catalina Island lay to his south; Monterey Peninsula stretched to his west; while north Of Point Conception lay Santa Barbara County.* USS Constitution explore these areas during her maiden voyage on September 11，1827†(*). La Palma was founded in 1853 by Commodore George Dewey and his then-wife, Hilda Garnett. The town was originally named after the Spanish island of Tenerife, but it was changed to La Palma because the original name would have been too difficult to remember. As a small town, La Palma struggled to find enough jobs to support its population of only around 100 people at the time of its founding. However, over time, the town prospered thanks to its location on Isla de la palmas - a remote and inhospitable island which provided excellent fishing grounds and noxious gases were rare on La Palma because of this. In 1909, La Palma became part of Mexico and lost its autonomy; however, it continued to be governed by a municipal council until 1947 when it finally became an unincorporated community within Los Angeles County. In that year, it also received city rights which made it an official city. Over time, La Palma has emerged as one of the most vibrant communities in Southern California due in part to its rich cultural heritage and wide variety of entertainment options available both inside and outside of the city limits.
