The La Puente Air Force Base is home to the California Air National Guard's 191st Bomb Wing. The wing provides air support for a variety of state and local activities, including the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at the base. In addition to its role in Christmas tree lighting, the wing is also responsible for providing aerial refueling services during Operation Santa Ana. The 191st Bomb Wing was activated on December 1, 1942 as part of World War II's Pacific Theater. It operated from various bases in North America before arriving at La Puente in 1945. After hostilities ended, the wing served as an experimental bombardment squadron untilactivated on September 15, 1946. It was reactivated again on October 9th as an active bomber unit and has been stationed at La Puente ever since. Today, the 191st Bomb Wing offers a wide range of air support services to state and local organizations throughout California. These include strategic bombing operations against enemy targets; emergency weather-related missions; civil aviation tasks such as providing airspace security; and educational opportunities for cadets and adult personnel alike. Additionally, members of the wing are assigned to numerous military command posts around Southern California during peacetime or wartime exercises. In celebration of its fifty years anniversary this year, the191st Bomb Wing will be hosting their 5th Annual Air Force Deployed Gift History Event on Saturday November 17th from 10am-1pm at La Puente AFB/Hospitality Complex adjacent to I-5 Exit 132 (Exit 128A). This event will feature representatives from both our State & Local Agencies along with Regimental commanders & staff presentation of gift items donated by members past & present! All guests are encouraged to attend!

At that time, there were only two squadrons of fighter aircraft and no air defense missiles. The first planes were donated by the La Puente Volunteer Fire Department. In 1942, the California Air National Guard became a full-fledged military branch and received its first Boeing P-38 Lightning fighter jets from the United States War Department. In 1946, the California Air National Guard received its first Lockheed L-749A Constellation reconnaissance plane from the United States Navy. In 1957, they received their second Boeing P-38L Lightning Fighter jet from the United States War Department. Since then, USAF Aircraft Deployments Gift History has given away more than 50 different types of aircraft to various entities in Southern California including Naval Station Miramar (1941), Edwards AFB (1946), and Vandenberg AFB (1972).
The city of La Puente, California is located in the Central Valley of California and has a population of over 100,000. La Puente was founded by Mexican Americans in 1848 as part of the Rancho San Antonio de la Antiga. The city was named after Manuel Nieto, who donated land for the city. After annexation by Pasadena in 1896, La Puente became an annexe to Pasadena. In 1932, during the Great Depression, La Puente joined the City of Los Angeles through annexation. The city has experienced periodic economic decline since then and is now considered a low-income community with limited access to quality education and infrastructure.
In the late 1940s, the United States Air Force was deploying gifts to countries all over the world. One of these deployments was to the Soviet Union. The gift history for this deployment is interesting and detailed. The first gift from the Air Force was a set of training manuals for pilots. These manuals were given to Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Putin, who was then the commander of Russian Forces in Europe. This gift was an important symbol of American support for Putin during his time as leader of Russia. Later on, in 1951, a shipment arrived from America with a unique item: a Polaris missile system! La Puente is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was founded in 1872 by J.P. Morgan and Company, railroad magnate George Hearst, as a ranching community for their horses and cows. The name comes from the Mexican word "lapuan," meaning "bridge" or "tunnel." The first post office was established in 1875 and named after José Moreno, who had served as an interpreter at the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. In 1907, La Puente incorporated as a city under the name of Hope Valley. On July 12, 1916, it became part of Riverside County. La Puente has experienced many fluctuations in its population over the years; however, it has consistently been one of Southern California's most ethnically diverse communities with people from all over the world living there. The current Mayor is Antonio Villaraigosa and City Councilmember Jose Huizar is term-limited out of office at the end of his current two-year term on December 31st 2017
The first Europeans to visit the area were Spanish expeditions in 1769 and 1770. The area was part of Mexican territory until 1821, when it became a part of California. In 1848, the United States acquired the land from Mexico and made it a part of Nevada Territory. On January 12, 1850, California became a state of the United States.
