La Puente is a small town in Kern County, California. It is located 33 miles east of Fresno and 27 miles west of Bakersfield. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. La Puente was named for José Ortega y Gasset, the Spanish governor of Alta California in 1847. The first Europeans to visit La Puente were the Rodeo party on February 14, 1846. They camped near present-day Hwy 395 and Chico Creek before moving upstream to explore what lay ahead. On March 3rd they met more people traveling from Monterey – about 20 men and 10 women led by Captain James Fife – who had also been exploring upriver These people may have been friendly but no one knows for sure since there are no records of their behavior or interactions with the local Native Americans until after their departure five days later on March 7th when an Indian boy named Juan Bandelier came across a group of deer near where he now lives south of I-5 and reported back to his family about what he had seen. On April 6th a wagon train consisting of over 100 pioneers, including Captains John Sutter and George Armstrong Custer, set out from Fort Tejon along mountain trails that would lead them down into central Kern County through today's Fresno Valley then northward through today's Bakersfield Valley before reaching their destination four days later on April 11th at Donner Pass which separated Obion Valley from Kern County. There they built temporary camps while awaiting transportation downriver to Stockton and other points farther downstream where they would join up with other groups migrating during that season’s summertime migration drive known as “the great journey.” Among those pioneer families who arrived in La Puente were: Baumann (Baumann), Becker (Becker), Berkely (Berkely), Brandt (Brandt), Bushnell (Bushnell), Carpenito (Carpenito) Castro(Castro) Connelly(Connelly). Among these new arrivals there were several children under the age of 16 including two girls only known as Jane Roeßler because their parents could not afford to buy them proper clothing so they were given away to relatives or friends when they reached adulthood. One such girl was Mary Ann Carr who married Janos Ruzsa in 1849 in San Francisco
