The La Puente Army Ammunition Plant was established in 1916 as the La Puente Arsenal, and became an army ammunition depot in 1919. It served as a center for artillery and machine gunnery during World War II, and was also used to produce jet airplanes. The plant closed in 1968, but reopened in 1984 as the La Puente Army Ammunition Depot Museum.

La Puente is a small city in Los Angeles County, California, United States. It was founded on March 14, 1877 by American settlers as the town of Oppenheimer. La Puente became an incorporated city on December 3, 1909. The population was 116 at the 2010 census. The first white settler in La Puente was George Waring who arrived from New York City in 1875 and erected a cabin on Rancho Felipe near present-day Beverly Hills. He was followed soon after by John Atherton and others from Boston, Massachusetts. By 1880 there were 11 families living in La Puente with an aggregate of 36 acres (16 hectares) of land holdings. In 1881,Oppenheimer voters chose to name their new town "La Puente" for Spanish painter José Clemente Lavallejo who had died only two years earlier at the age of 37 while working as a surveyor for Captain James Hutton's Inland Empire Railroad Company west of San Diego. On March 14, 1877 - three days after Mexico achieved independence from Spain - American pioneers named George Waring and his wife Jennie Oppenheimer set out from New York City aboard the sidewheeler SS Pacific Mail boat "Newark" bound for central California via Panama Canal Zone and Baja California Peninsula. They reached La Punta about midway through their journey when they met Mexican nationals Antonio Ramirez y Baca and Manuel Martinez de la Pena returning home after taking part in Mexico's victory over Spanish forces at Buena Ventura Canyon on October 26th that year. The Oppenheimers disembarked their vessel and walked one mile (1 km) to a nearby rancho where they lodged for the night before continuing their walk the next morning to purchase land which would become La Puenta proper: 108 acres (41 hectares). That same day they also purchased 1/2 acre (0.2 hectare) of what would later become Elysian Park Cemetery northwest of downtown La Puente.. Over time many other pioneers added to or bought into these initial homesteads including: George Cushing Downing, banker; Augustus Dickey; Hiram Powers; Lyman Beecher Stowe; Amos Eaton; Jeremias Priestly Morse...many now interred within today’s borders of La Punta Cemetery . By 1890 there were 176 people living in La Punta with an aggregate landholding totaling 514 acres (227 hectares). The majority were Anglo-Saxon Protestants but there were also sizeable numbers of Mexicans (mainly Catholic), Japanese Americans, Filipinos and African Americans among those originally settled hereabouts during this early period of post-war America when rural areas across Southern California were quickly emptying due largely to economic depression brought about by dramatic increases in rail traffic coming into Los Angeles following World War I (+50%). Many residents continued to settle into newly created towns such as West Covina or Sylmar adjacent toLA while others returned home eking out a meager existence farming or fishing along coastal stretches near Orange County beaches...thus most contemporary documentation documenting early LA area settlement comes primarily from surveys conducted by US Government military forces during World War II specifically targeting Japanese Americans residing eastward along US –Mexican border territories
In 1847, Mexico acquired California from the United States as part of the Mexican-American War. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided for land grants to Mexicans in California, including La Puente. The town was founded by 35 families who arrived in 1849 and named it after José de la Puente, a General under Mexican command during the war. The town prospered due to its location on the Pico Rivera Fault, an important geological feature that helped make California one of the most seismically active regions in the world. This also made it an attractive place for agriculture and ranching, which led to a growth in industry and commerce. In 1888, La Puente became a city when it was incorporated as part of Los Angeles County. In 1936, it was renamed after President Franklin D. Roosevelt because he had visited it twice while serving as Governor of New York (1932-34).
