The city of La Puente, California is located in the San Fernando Valley on the border of Los Angeles County and Orange County. The population was 223,821 at the 2010 census. It is one of two cities in Los Angeles County, the other being downtown LA. The city straddles both sides of a valley that forms part of the Santa Monica Mountains. The first people to live here were Native American traders from what is now Oklahoma and Kansas who came down from Canada in 1827 looking for land to settle. In 1874, Mexican immigrant José María La Puente married American woman Emma L. Cleland in a ceremony at the Mission San Gabriel Church. The couple founded a new life in California, working their way up through the ranks of society. As America became more racially segregated, the La Puentes blended into the African American community and raised two children there. In 1924, after years of service to her adopted home state as Supervisor of Los Angeles County, La Puente was elected Californian Senator from Los Angeles. She served until her death in 1969. During her time as senator, La Puente took an active role in fighting for social justice issues such as housing reform and education reform in California. She also championed legislation that would create bilingual services for immigrants living in California and act to protect Native Americans from discrimination.
On October 14, 1846, the first post office in La Puente was opened. The town was named after General José Joaquín de la Hoz y Ortega, who fought in Mexico's War of Independence.
