La Puente is one of the oldest towns in Los Angeles County and it was first settled by Mexican Americans in 1857. In 1899, La Puente became an incorporated city. Today, La Puente is a cultural and commercial center for Southern Californians who live within its boundaries. The city has a rich history that began when Spanish missionaries established their outpost here in 1769. From these early days until 1 January 1913, when it became part of the United States as part of Alta California, La Punta served as an important stop on Mexican-American Trail westward to New Mexico. The most significant event that occurred during this time period was the visit by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna to Yuma Penitentiary on 5 October 1848. General Santa Anna had been elected president of Mexico after winning a three-way election against Manuel Micheltorena and Juan Bautista Alvarado y Pavón and he wanted to show his power base to American settlers in order to unify all of Aztlan under one banner. He also hoped to find support from other Mexican generals who might be able to stand up against Ulysses S Grant’s forces advancing through Arizona and into southern California. At Yuma Penitentiary, General Santa Anna met with local leaders including José María Castro and José Vasconcelos about forming a new Mexican state called “Alta Californiana” which would encompass much of what is now Orange County and parts of Riverside County as well as portions of San Bernardino County and Ventura County today. Unfortunately for General Santa Anna, he learned that American forces were moving closer each day towards Yuma without him knowing it so he abandoned his plans for an independent Mexican state just before they arrived there on 5 October 1848 (the same day that Major John C Thomas surrendered at Adobe Walls). This event led directly to Anglo-Mexican tensions which would continue throughout Late 19th century Los Angeles area due primarily to Anglo-American competition over land ownership rights and labor opportunities caused by waves of cheap immigration from Europe over the previous several decades (see also: Gold Rush era).
