In 1846, José Manuel María de la Puente was born in the small town of La Puente, California. After studying law at the University of San Francisco, he moved to Los Angeles in 1855 and founded his own law firm. In 1861, he became a U.S. Senator from California and served until 1865. He also served as governor of California from 1863 to 1865. After leaving office, de la Puente resumed his legal career and was elected to the United States Senate again in 1870 and 1871. He died in 1893 after a long illness and is buried in Hollywood Hills Cemetery near his wife, actress Zinaida Goldwyn (1859-1941). The city of La Puente was founded on December 15th, 1850 by Don Antonio Vasquez de Quiroz on land grant given him by Mexican President José Manuel María Morelos during the Mexican-American War for Spanish Californias (1847-48). The City of La Puenta grew rapidly due to its location between Los Angeles and San Francisco, as well as its cheap land prices. By 1860 it had over 1,000 residents and an economy based largely on agriculture; however following annexation by Southern California during the 1880sLa Puente flourished as a commercial center with new businesses opening up around railroad tracks that running through downtown LA then Further down into what is now Boyle Heights/East LA
