It was in 1846 that Mexican immigrants, known as the "Puente people," arrived in California. The Puente people were of the Nahuatl language and they had been living in Mexico for centuries. They were farmers and their main trade was with the Spanish. When war broke out between America and Spain, many of the Puente people decided to migrate to California. They sailed overland from Veracruz, Mexico on July 14, 1846. Once they reached California, they set up a farmstead called La Puente (the Bridge). The first store opened in La Puentecita (the Village) on October 15th, 1846. The first post office opened in La Puenta on November 3rd, 1847. In 1850, when General Kearny divided California into military districts, La Puencia became part of district number 8A. In 1861-1862, during the American Civil War (1861-1865), La Puenta was part of district number 2B and it is said that some Confederate soldiers camped there during that time

The original name of the city may have been Spanish for "place where the Blessed Virgin Mary Reigns." The city was incorporated on October 15, 1912. In 1951, La Puente became one of two cities (the other being Pomona) to be placed within the newly formed City of LA. The growth and development of La Puente has been various and significant: from an agricultural community served by several small ranches to an urban center with its own police department, fire department, library, post office and several restaurants.
