La Puente is a small town in Riverside County, California. It lies on the eastern edge of the San Gabriel Mountains and is adjacent to Los Angeles. The town dates back to 1857 when prospectors discovered gold in what is now La Puente Valley. In 1870, it was named after General Antonio Vargas, who fought at the Battle of Buena Vista and later became governor of California.

La Puente is named after Manuel Ponce de León and its first post office opened on October 7, 1874. It was officially incorporated as a city on February 14, 1912. La Puente's ZIP code 82334 is considered to be part of the Orange County Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "La Puente" may derive from two Spanish words meaning "the well" or "bridge". A bridge over the Cahuenga River carried the name to English speakers who called it Lankershim Boulevard (now Lankershim Avenue). In 1916, when La Puente became an official city and changed its name to honor José María Cuellar y Mendoza (1862-1937), Mayor of Mexico City during that year's Mexican Revolution, his father-in-law Félix Vargas provided $10,000 for the acquisition of land east of Lankershim Boulevard which would become known as La Avenida Colón (later renamed Urena Street). This grant also included building blocks now located along much of what would become downtown La Puenta - including present day Market Street and parts oflarmeria Road - with one block remaining undeveloped adjacent to today's corner of Church and Urena Streets. The naming rights for this block were purchased by Philip Morris Companies in 1951 before they moved their corporate headquarters from Newark, New Jersey to nearby Westwood Village. In 1920s architect John Haggan designed a cottage type house called Los Angeles Play House at 601 N., Steuben Street in what is now Park Row near Chavez Ravine Metro Station; this home still stands and can be toured today through public access via OpenStreetMap

In 1821, California became a part of the United States of America. The Mexican-American War began in 1846 and lasted for more than a year. In that war, Mexico lost control of California to the United States. The U.S. acquired California through the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, which ended the war. With California under American control, entrepreneurs started up new businesses in what is now La Puente Valley and Pasadena County. The first post office in La Puente was established on July 15, 1851. By 1870, there were over 400 businesses in La Puente Valley and Pasadena County employing over 4,000 people. The number of residents grew from 2,500 to 15,000 between 1850 and 1900. Businesses generated jobs that supported families as they moved into new subdivisions near downtown Los Angeles and other bedroom communities throughout Southern California during this time period. As business opportunities increased throughout the state during this time frame, so too did social tensions surrounding race and ethnicity within Spanish-speaking communities in southern California during this era; tension which would continue until after World War II when many Latinos came to escape discrimination in their home countries during the wartime anti-immigrant hysteria known as “the Great Migration”
In 1846, Don José de la Puente purchased the Rancho San Vicente y Maya from the Mexican government. The ranch was located on present-day La Puente Boulevard in south Pasadena. In 1851, José married María Antonia Cisneros and they started to plant grapes in their new property. By 1860, they had built a winery and began marketing their wine around the region. By 1870, they had produced over 1 million gallons of wine. In 1881, they donated their land to the city of Los Angeles for use as a parkland area. The company continued production until 1886 when it merged with another winery to form Brown & Williamson Brewing Company.
