During World War II, Los Angeles County received several large shipments of naval stores from Japan via Long Beach on December 5th 1944-January 2nd 1945 inclusive . These shipments totaled 1 million pounds and were stored at various locations around LA County until February 1946 when they were moved into Lakewood near Glendale for safekeeping pending clearance by USAAF authorities headed by General Eisenhower who inspected it on March 3rd 1945 thinking that there may be use for it within USA military installations worldwide . La Puente is a small town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 1,686 at the 2010 census. La Puente is located in east-central Kern County and is part of the Bakersfield metropolitan area. It is about 18 miles north of Bakersfield on US 395 and 12 miles south of the city of Bakersfield on US 91. The first Europeans to visit La Puente were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his crew from San Francisco Bay in 1602 when they sailed from Mexico City laden with goods for Spain. Antonio de Anza then passed through this region on his way to find the Gold Rush in 1848. In 1865, General George Custer led an army into southern Kern County during the California Gold Rush and discovered what became known as La Punta (the headland). A post office called Los Angeles was established at or near present-day La Puente in 1875; it served as the county seat until 1905. In 1906, numerous Latinos who had made their homes in Bakersfield started moving to La Puente because of its growing agricultural economy and easy access to transportation via railroads. By 1912, over 60% of the population identified themselves as Latino. Many businesses were started specifically catering to Hispanics such as El Paso Restaurant where tamales were invented by José Andres Sánchez back in 1912 (now a popular Mexican restaurant chain). Latinos also began buying property here starting with ranches that had been donated by ranchers such as Manuel Diaz and Carlos Ortiz y Gómez during World War I. In 1928 Mayor Oscar Zaragoza declared May Day "Latino Independence Day" which has been celebrated annually ever since by parents hosting picnics on or near Elm Street across from City Hall until today when flags are flown at half-staff along with flyovers overhead marking special occasions such as National Hispanic Heritage Month or International Latino History Week throughout most of October/November each year! On September 20, 1846, Mexican nationals José Antonio Baca and his wife Maria del Carmen Chávez were living in La Puente when they were arrested for illegally crossing the international border into the United States. The U.S. government was not content with this activity and decided to take action. A group of soldiers arrived at the Chávez home and began arresting family members one by one, including José Antonio Baca. After a few minutes of struggle, the soldiers retreated as a result of gunfire from defenders inside the house. Jose Antonio Baca was dragged outside and shot dead as he lay on the ground; his wife was also killed in what became known as "The Battle of La Puente". This event led to increased tension between Mexico and America due to racism towards Mexicans in both countries.
