During his career, General Wainwright played a significant role in changing how Marines are trained and equipped. Today, there are numerous businesses that rely on the support of marines stationed here including Brooks Air Force Base which provides airlifting services to various locations around Los Angeles County; Naval Surface Warfare Center Long Beach which manufactures submarines; Naval Aviation Ground Training Station Miramar which teaches basic aviation skills to naval aviators; and Marine Aircraft Group Twelfth Special Operations Squadron (MAG-12) which is responsible for providing close air support within Operation Inherent Resolve. LA Puente is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about 30 miles east of Fresno, and 25 miles west of Bakersfield. La Puente was founded in 1876 by James S. Higgins and John S. Pritchard as a rancho (farmstead). The original owners were Jedediah Smith, who arrived in 1847 from Illinois, and his partner, Mary Anna Smith, who immigrated from New York City in 1850. In 1879, Henry Hagedorn bought the farmstead and changed its name to La Puente Rancho. In 1916, Mexican-American rancher Manuel Gomez purchased La Puente Rancho from Hagedorn and raised livestock there until his death in 1951. From 1951 to 1984, the ranch was managed by Harry Wolkoff Jr., who was also the owner of nearby Eastridge Ranchos. The main attractions within walking or driving distance of La Puente are the Town Lake reservoir filled with fish for fishing (open daily 9am-4pm), Old Spanish Mission San Gabriel de Nuestra Señora de la Concepcion Parish Church (a historic landmark dating back to 1798), and Palma Park Cemetery (which contains remains of Californio Mexicans killed during the Mexican–American War). Other interesting points include: an old flour mill on Nueces Creek that still stands; a small population of Asiatic lions living on government property near town; two schools operated by private organizations: one serving grades Pre-Kindergarten through sixth grade; one serving grades 7 through 12; three churches providing worship services along with clubhouses/households for country living members; an agricultural fair held every month at local high school gymnasium featuring exhibits from various farmers' markets across central California; several restaurants including Chico's Chinese Restaurant and El Pollo Loco both inside and outside Oficinas Tienda Libre on Main Street); two football fields used by community teams such as The Pirates (now known as Vallejo High School's varsity team) since 1923 when it first became part of Alameda Unified School District; a small movie theater built in 1927 that has been converted into office space for many businesses including Goodwill Industries;; numerous gift shops including TJ Maxx (), Sears (), JCPenney (), Macy's (); four banks - First National Bank () -anchored at each end of Main Street separated by driveways promoting local merchants selling their products (); over 100 businesses have been located within one block radius since 2007 when commercial zoning ordinances were rewritten bringing more competition toLa Puente.; plus numerous residences which are open year-round for visitors looking to experience agriculture while living out their own dreams within easy reach

The city of La Puente, California was founded on April 6, 1876 by Mexicans who had come to the area during the Mexican-American War. The city was named for José María La Puente, a general in the Mexican army who fought against American forces. La Puente quickly became a major center of trade and industry in the Central Valley. In 1912, La Puente annexed the neighboring town of Anza Borrego. La Puente has been through many changes over its history. It originally consisted of only a few streets and houses. By 1915, it had grown to encompass over 100 blocks with a population of over 2,000 people. In addition to its economic importance, La Puente also played an important role in California politics and culture. In 1969, it was renamed after Ulysses S. Grant Wood Jr., one of America's most famous historians and educators
La Puente (Spanish: "the bridge") was a 1.2-mile long, three-bridge over the San Gabriel River in Los Angeles County, California. It was built in 1875 and opened to traffic on October 15 of that year. The first two bridges were replaced by the current ones in 1949 and 1952, respectively.
