The vaccine helped prevent smallpox outbreaks in America during the 1830s and 1840s, which is why it is considered one of America’s oldest military traditions. Since then, different branches of the navy have bestowed their own gift or donation on La Puente residents. The Los Angeles Harbor Department donated land for Naval Station Point San Pedro in 1922; this station played an important role during World War II because it served as a naval base for aircraft carriers and vessels USS Enterprise (CV-6) and USS Yorktown (CV-8). The La Puente Naval Base was established in 1848 as the U.S. Naval Station La Puente, California. The base became an important center for naval operations in California during World War II and afterward played a significant role in the defense of Los Angeles County and the Western Pacific. In 1971, the Naval Base was closed and its functions were absorbed by Edwards Air Force Base.

Navy gift history goes back to the early days of the United States Navy. The first naval ships were built in the mid-19th century, and soon sailors were able to carry goods and troops around the world. In 1853, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued a proclamation calling for navy gifts for every American soldier in World War II. This led to the development of military maritime gifts, such as USS Constitution and USS Enterprise cruise missiles.
The first people to live in La Puente were the Ohlone, who arrived about 7000 years ago. The Ohlone built their village on a hill overlooking the current-day city. They were succeeded by the Pomo, who built another village nearby. In 1821, Mexican settlers called the Kumeyaay name for this area La Puente because of its similarity to Spanish towns of that name in California. American troops burned down the Ohlone village in 1847 as part of General Antonio López de Santa Anna's effort to establish order in Mexico following its overthrow by Mexican forces. At that time, La Puente was part of Alta California and was administered by Lieutenant Colonel James Fenton Unincorporated District No. 4 (Alta California). In 1850, when Mexico became a republic under Emperor Pedro Márquez de Ayala, La Puente became part of Californias new Central Department under Governor Francisco Leguizamo. It remained within his department until it was transferred to Mexico City Province effective January 1, 1861 pursuant to an Organic Act passed by Congress on October 20th, 1860 which divided Alta California into two provinces--Central and Northern--with Los Angeles County being located within Central Province. On July 24th 1870 Juana Victoria Cuevas married José Nieto y Crespo at San Fernando Cathedral in honor of Don José Nieto's father-in-law who had died some months earlier from a fever contracted during his journey from Sonora across Arizona along what is now Interstate 10 en route from Zacatecas Valley through Chihuahua and Baja California to Monterey Bay where he had intended to found a mission school for Indians known as Nuestra Señora del Carmen Mission; unfortunately he did not make it back alive but left behind many children including Juana Victoria’s younger brother Antonito “Tony” Cuevas and her sister Empara Cuevas [1] In fact Tony has been recognized as one of Mexicos most important historical figures with numerous books and articles being published about him both here and abroad over the years [2].Juana Victoria was born in 1788 near Guadalajara Jalisco Mexico while her mother Acilia María Dominguez Lobo was still living with her family when she married José Nieto y Crespo after learning about God’s promise made via visions she had while dancing around her house.) However they only lived together for 2 years before she got pregnant again so they divorced soon after Jose moved away with his family to Durango Colorado then later New Mexico Territory where he died probably around 1880 or thereabouts) It wasn't until 1892 when Amalia Herrera finally obtained land grants totaling 6 square miles east of present day La Puenta city limits - what is now known as Chavez Ravine - granting her ownership over alluvial soil lying between flowing rivers Rio Hondo on the north side extending into Coyote Creek on center while distant hills on opposite sides extended beyond creek boundaries forming today's Park Blocks area adjacent south border fence line betweenCity Limits Of Pasadena And Huachuca Hills also included therein amazon rainforest federal wildlife refuge . The original La Puente Adobe house was built in the 1820s on what is now the corner of Webster and Peralta Streets. It was owned by Captain John Sutter, who founded the city of Sacramento. The building served as his home and office until 1851 when it burned down. In 1875, Nathaniel Hawthorne purchased the Adobe from Captain John Sutter for $1,000. He used it as a writing retreat before moving to Concord, Massachusetts in 1879. In 1902 he donated it to California State University at Northridge for use as a research center. The current La Puente Adobe house was built in 1949-1955 by architect Maynard Ferguson on the ashes of Hawthorne's oldadobe house. It is one of California State University at Northridge's main campus buildings and has been used as an administrative building, library, and dining hall since its inception.
