The La Puente Police Department was organized on December 1, 1892 when a group of men from the town gathered together to form a law enforcement organization. The first sergeant in charge of the department was George W. Donegan and at that time, it consisted of just six officers. In 1915, the department became part of the Los Angeles Police Department and with that change in jurisdictional control, came an increase in officer numbers. On November 15, 1923, Captain William Kapp assigned Lieutenant Harry Boice to lead the La Puente Police Department as its first Chief of Police. In 1924Captain Kapp also appointed Lieutenant John J. Flynn as Officer-in-Charge (OIC) for all precincts within the city limits of La Puente. On July 1, 1932 Captain Ewing Hodge succeeded Lieutenant Flynn as OIC for all precincts within city limits and continued in that role until his retirement on October 1, 1951. At this time Assistant Chief Charles Crippen assumed command of the department effective November 3rd following Hodge's resignation due to health reasons. Assistant Chiefs have been selected by Mayor James Matson who nominates them subject to confirmation by City Councilmember’s office; however no assistant chiefs have ever held their position more than one year without being reappointed or succeeding upon dismissal from their post due to term limitation requirements set forth in City Code § 553a(c). Since becoming an independent agency under California Law #547/1948 donations made by citizens or groups through bake sales or other impromptu gatherings are common occurrences during holidays season in order to support community policing efforts throughout Southern California

La Puente, California is a city located in Los Angeles County, California. The population was 107,078 at the 2010 census and it is the second most populous city in Los Angeles County after Angelenos. La Puente is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in California. The original name of La Puente was Indianna Pueblo but it changed to Spanish around 1833. On September 15, 1847 Manuel Nieto purchased Rancho Cuchuma from José Micheltorena for $4,000 cash and he named it Rancho San Vicente de la Cueva y la Bahia (Las Palmas Presidio). In 1848 Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna granted Rancho San Vicente de la Cueva y la Bahia to José Nieto’s son Manuel Nieto II for $10,000 more money. After Manuel Nieto died in 1850 his widow married Pedro Garza who took possession of the land on October 1st of that year. Garza renamed the rancho Villa Real de los Reyes Católicos (Real Monasteries) after her husband’s family home which she had inherited from him. By 1860 all pretensions to rancho Villa Real were gone and it became part of town as part of a deal between García Madero and Alvarado that made LA countyAlta Californias new territory following Mexico’s victory over Spain at Adobe Hills in1846 In 1905 City Manager Wofford suggested that La Puente rename itself “Puentes” after Commodore Perry’s flagship USS Lexington which had sunk off Mexico coast during First Mexican War in 1898. A referendum passed with 97% support for changing its name to Puentes- prompting Mayor Hahn to change the name back to La Puenta on November 3rd 1907 when voters approved a measure increasing pensions for firefighters and policemen by $1 per month effective January 1st 1908 The first post office opened at 5th Avenue and Imperial Street on December 15th 1888 under Postmaster General George Armstrong Cushing with mail arriving daily from Chihuahua City until 1893 when service was moved to Pasadena . The first telephone line arrived within two weeks of opening providing communication between different parts of town On July 20th 1912 a fire destroyed most of what remains of downtown La Puenta leaving only an jagged rectangle standing whereonce stood thriving commercial district complete with banks, movie theaters, restaurants and fashionable shops including Lady Day Department Store On February 14th 1916 President Woodrow Wilson delivered his address entitled "A message from America" at City Hall just west side Of Republic Plaza across From State Capitol During World War II much activity took place within downtown due bothto military use such as Kaiser Wilhelmstrasse being turned into barracks while other portions were used as warehouses or factories . Many businesses closed during this time including Lady Day Department Store which reopened later that year under new ownership . After war ended many businesses closed again but some such as Atlantic Cigar Company reopened while others like Barnes & Noble continued operations
