The La Quinta Coast Guard Station has been a part of the community since 1935. The station is one of the oldest in California and has been providing coastal security services since the early days of World War II. Today, the Coast Guard Station offers a wide variety of services to the community, including maritime security, law enforcement, firefighting and rescue. In addition to its primary responsibilities of protecting our coastline, the station also provides outreach programs and educational opportunities for local children. One of the unique aspects of Coast Guard Station La Quinta is that it was originally founded as an ammunition storage depot. Today, we store a wide variety of supplies for our mission including firearms and explosives. This stockpile gives us some flexibility when it comes time to purchase new equipment or restock on supplies. Additionally, we are home to two museum displays about maritime history in Southern California: The USS Constitution Museum and The Battle Of San Diego Museum. In 1935, when Coastal Security Service began operations at La Quinta Coast Guard Station, it was one of only a few such stations in Northern California that provided coastal security services during World War II. At its peak during this time period, Coastal Security Service had a complement of ten officers and fifty-six enlisted members working outposts along California’s coastlines from Santa Barbara County south to Ventura County and east to Baja California Sur! The La Quinta Coast Guard Station was established on December 17, 1941 as part of the California National Guard. The unit was activated at Point Loma and served in the Malaya-Thailand area. In 1945, the station became a coast guard post and began providing security for the harbor. On May 8, 1951, the station became a full-service coast guard station and is still in operation today.

Today, the Coast Guard gift history is extensive and varied. There are many different types of gifts that have been given over the years, from children's books to model boats. Some of the earliest Coast Guard gift history can be found in 1892 when a set of binoculars were given as a thank you for helping during the Spanish-American War. In 1903, an opera box was gifted in memory of Admiral Samuel Eliot Morison who had served on the Coast Guard prior to his induction into the navy. The coast guard continued to give small gifts throughout the years until 1938 when a set of sunglasses was given as a token of appreciation for service during World War II. Throughout the 1960s through 1990s, various items such as flares, T-shirts and hats were given as part of annual gift campaigns or in commemoration of special occasions such as Memorial Day or Veterans Day. These campaigns often included auctions where items could be purchased from local businesses or eBay sellers. In 1857, La Quinta was founded by Captain John Sutter and his family on the Rancho San Diego del Norte. The ranch was located in what is now Riverside County between Lake Arrowhead and Palm Springs. Captain Sutter had come to California in 1849 as part of the Mormon Battalion and he purchased land southeast of La Quinta from J.P. Morgan for $12,000. He began to build a home at La Quinta in 1850 and named it "Sutter's Fort". The first post office at La Quinta was established on December 16, 1856, and was known as "La Quinta". In 1861, the town became a county seat when Riverside County was formed from parts of Los Angeles County. The name change came about because an early resident, George Peralta, Sr., who lived near downtown Larkspur changed his name to "La Q" after buying some land there in 1860. During World War II, La Quinta played a pivotal role in the war effort with its military airfield (now Edwards Air Force Base). After the war ended in 1945, the town became engaged in a rapid growth rate which led to difficulties both financing infrastructure projects and meeting population needs. In 1970s vernacular terms began to be replaced by more formal ones such as "the city", so that LAQ might better reflect its current socioeconomic status within Southern California's largest metropolitan area covering Orange County / Anaheim Resort/Santa Ana etc... LAQ has seen various changes over time including becoming an all-ages entertainment district; becoming one of Southern California's most diverse cities with large numbers of people from other parts of North America; hosting major global events such as Reggae Jazz Festivals every year since 1978; experiencing significant gentrification over recent years with increasing number of residents moving into luxury housing developments adjacent to Interstate 5 or commuting into Hollywood or Downtown Los Angeles; seeing increasing calls for greater community engagement through things like public forums and open houses hosted by City Hall or government agencies like Planning Commission - all while remaining largely rural until very recently
