La Quinta is a small town in Riverside County, California. It is located on the east bank of the San Gabriel River and is bordered by Moreno Valley to the north, Murrieta to the east, and Jurupa Valley to the south. The population was 15,825 at the 2010 census. La Quinta has been home to many famous people throughout its history including ranchers Pat Garrett and John Wayne, actor/director George Stevens, as well as author J.D. Salinger and business magnate Herbert Sargent Crane. The first European settlers in what is now La Quinta were Spanish Franciscans who founded a mission in 1797. In 1821 they sold land to James Irvine who established Rancho La Brea Mexican land grant that included present-day La Quinta. A road connecting Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties was built through Rancho La Brea which opened up much of present-day Riverside County for settlement. In 1856 William Mulholland arrived in La Quinta from his ranch near Redlands with his family and started a grocery store called Mulholland's Store which became one of Riverside's most successful businesses until it closed down in 1922 due to World War II shortages of food products during the McCarthy Era (1948-1957). Rancho la brea was patented by other individuals including James Irvine on October 10th 1821 also known as "Patents Nos 2992 & 2993".
