The history of La Quinta coffee starts with the three brothers who founded the coffee business in 1892. In 1916, they opened a small grocery and beanshop on Camino Real near what is now University Avenue. The business grew rapidly and by 1922, they had bought an all-purpose vehicle to transport their beans to local roasters. They soon became one of the leading coffee businesses in California, selling their beans all over the state. In 1968, The Koffee Klatch Coffee Company was founded in La Quinta by Harry Baerwald and his brother Julius (pictured). The company operated out of a small storefront on Elm Street until 1984 when it moved to its current location at 6055 Nador Road. Over the years, Koffee Klatch has become one of LA's most popular cafes with its unique taste and culture. Today, Harry Baerwald remains as owner/founder and head brewer.

The city of La Quinta was founded in 1867 by Churched Goodman and his brother, John. The Goodmans were a Quaker family who came to this area from the town of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They started a small mill on the banks of the San Gabriel River, which they operated until 1875. In 1876, Churched Goodman married Margaret Ann Robbins. MargaretAnn had come to California with her parents when she was four years old and they lived in Stockton until they moved to La Quinta in 1879. In those early days, there were no schools in La Quinta so children learned to read and write at home. Mrs. Robbins helped found the first school here in 1881 and it remained open until 1957. In 1886, George Harmon bought the mill and began operating it as a flour mill for local farmers. From that time on, La Quinta's economy was based on agriculture rather than manufacturing. In 1915, he sold the mill to Jens Ditlevig who continued running it as an agricultural processing plant until 1971 when it became part of San Miguel Corporation's paper products plant in Signal Hill . Ditlevig also built a house here which is now known as the Ditlevig House Museum . He donated it to the city of La Quinta in 1966 because he felt that its importance outweighed its value as a property owner. The house is now used as City Hall . An important part of history associated with La Quinta are its murals created by Luis Rivera during World War II (1939-1945). Many soldiers brought their families here during that time because there wasn't enough food or housing available back east for them all. Rivera created beautiful murals throughout Los Angeles County including parts of Riverside and San Bernardino counties while living here between 1939-1945
