La Quinta, California is a city located in Imperial County, California. The population was 46,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Imperial County. La Quinta is one of 10 cities in the San Diego-Carlsbad Metropolitan Statistical Area and it covers 9 square miles (23 km2). The first resident to call La Quinta their home was Juan Rodriguez who settled there in 1847. He named his property Rancho Viejo de la Silla after his father’s holdings near Viejo de laSilla, Mexico. In 1851, Don José Ortiz founded what is now known as Orange Avenue and called it San Diego del Oro Street because Mexican goldmines had been discovered nearby at that site. In 1860 local entrepreneur John Doolittle opened a store on First Avenue which became one of the most important businesses in town until its closure during Prohibition. In late 1916 Pacific Gas & Electric Company built a hydroelectric power plant on Coyote Creek which began providing electricity to La Quinta and other communities in Imperial County for use by industry and homesites alike starting at $1 per kWh from April 1917 until December 1922 when rates were raised to $3 per kWh due to increased energy production from new sources such as oil fields following World War I. The Coyote Creek Hydroelectric Plant Museum is open every day except Sundays from 10am to 4pm admission free; close July 4th thru October 1st Memorial Day Weekend only! Today PG&E continues operating the plant with both small turbines used for powering streetlights/street cleaning equipment and large turbines used for generating power for pumping water out of the creek below making this an environmentally friendly facility also!
