La Quinta is a small town in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 7,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first people to live in La Quinta were José and Ana Hidalgo who arrived from Mexico in 1836. Juan Bandini, Sr., built a cabin on Rancho Bajo in 1843. The Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was established in 1795 and served as the religious center for much of Southern California. In 1847, Santiago Félix de la Cruz named his Rancho La Quinta after what he called "the most beautiful spot on earth." In 1852, Amalia Pacheco and her husband Pedro founded Mutual Colony Insurance Company which became one of the largest insurance companies in California. They also donated land to build Riverside Methodist Episcopal Church (1862). John Sutter first came to La Quinta with his family when they moved from Sacramento Valley in 1849. He started a tannery on First Street and later built an olive oil mill on Mill Creek near present-day Cathedral City. In 1860, he sold his interest in the mill to John Beale who began trading goods between Stockton and Los Angeles along what is now Interstate 5 before moving upriver to build what is now Agua Caliente Casino Resort & Spa on Janesville Road between Indian Wells Road and Friars Road south of Palm Springs Boulevard (now I-10 east of La Quinta Boulevard). In 1865, Jens Jensen started driving cattle out onto irrigated land that he had purchased from Antonio Zamora about four miles north of where today's Uvi Avenue meets Highway 95; this area would eventually become known as Rancho Mirage Montebello or simply "Rancho Mirage". He name for his ranch was Oso Nojoiño meaning "dry mountain".Jensen continued farming until 1886 when he married Ida Larson; they then moved their farm downrange to what would become known as Pismo Beach because it had been given by Governor Manuel Nieto as part of a parcel grant for citrus production near Point Mugu on December 12th during 18560 State visit by President James Buchanan urdered by military governor Admirror Luis Noriega due infighting over power within Mexican government over Anglo settlers; all property west of completion line was taken including Oso Nojoiño which formed eastern border of current day Del Mar Village . From here they marketed fruit products direct to stores throughout Northern California under various names such as Penniman's etc before finally settling down at their new home full time around 1915 It wasn't until 1926 that construction began on the originalLa Quinta High School which opened its doors September 3rd 1927 after years fundraising efforts led by Mrs rancherita Carmona TAGUZZI! Classes met there until January 1st 1928 when sister high school Redondo Beach High School opened its doors! In 1857, east of La Quinta was a small town called Floresville. The name may come from the Rancho Flores Viejo which was located in present-day San Bernardino County. on October 7, 1857, the Mexican government granted to Francisco Cárdenas and his wife María Antonia Vallejo 2,000 acres (0.8 km²) of land in what is now Orange County for ranching and farming purposes. It was part of the Rancho Santa Ana del Rio Verde Grant which also included parts of Riverside and Anaheim Counties. The first settlers arrived at Floresville between June and September 1858. They were five men: José Aranda, Manuel Nieto, Lorenzo Mata, Francisco Ramirez and Augustín Zúñiga. The grant allowed them to build homes with their own land or purchase other people’s land where they could farm crops and raise livestock until it could be leased back to them by the Mexican government or sold to others for agricultural purposes. In 1862 Juan Bautista de la Hoz bought some of the original grant land east of La Quinta from Fernando de Alvarado y Costilla for $2 per acre ($12 today). He began growing corn there in 1863 as part of his effort to improve soil fertility in that area so that more wine could be grown nearby. In 1865 he donated an additional 1/4 mile (0.6 km²) to the community for a public square; this square still exists today as Main Street near La Quinta High School."
