La Quinta is an unincorporated community in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 5,023 at the 2010 census. It lies on the eastern side of Kern River Boulevard and is northeast of Big Sur. La Quinta became a post office on February 15, 1879, and it has since been incorporated as a town. The first European to visit what is now California was Gaspar de Portolà on November 7, 1769 during his " Voyage of discovery ". After landing near Monterey Bay he continued up the coast until he reached Point Conception about 22 miles (35 kilometers) south of San Francisco. This was the beginning of modern day California because while Portolà was exploring California any Spanish settlements were quickly abandoned due to hostile natives and lack of food supplies. In 1821 Mexican land grants were made to Juan Bautista Alvarado and Mariano Borlaug for Rancho Buena Vista Los Coahuilas within present-day Kern County. In 1847las Horcasitas grant included parts of present-day La Quinta Canyon and its immediate surroundings including part of present-day Big Sur. On October 12, 1859the entire area east of Big Sur from Harney Lake to Sutter Butte became part of Atascadero when that rancho was granted by Mexican Governor Manuel Micheltorena to John Cranch following their victory over American forces at Adobe Walls in1857). On January 6th 1870 Victoriano Huerta granted Rancho San Miguel al Carmelo also within present-day La Quinta Canyon with an exclusion zone extending into Little San Joaquin Valley northward to Russian Flat which lay immediately southwesterly beyond his boundaries; this stretch became known as Huerta's Corral District after him . On March 14th 1870 José Altuve obtained title from General Antonio López de Santa Anna for Rancho Las Humboldtias located east halfway between Atascadero and Pajaritos Creek within current-day Big Sur; this grant extended inland along both banks of the river for a total distance ranging from latitude 37°34'N - 118°14'W (northwest corner), all the way downriver to latitude 36°06'N - 119°36'W (southwest corner); finally Altuve received title west halfway along the southern bank past Umeå they had intersected some years earlier while surveyors working for Captain James Cook took possession thereof northwesterly past Russian Flat but no farther than Asotillo Creek where they had stopped short after finding deposits good only for cattle rather than gold ore.) The La Quinta area is located in the San Bernardino Valley in southern California. It has been inhabited by the Mono people for over 10,000 years. The area was first called Rancho Cañon de Santa Ana, and then, after it was given to Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo by Spanish governor Alvarado on December 3, 1769, it became part of Mission San Gabriel Arcángel. In 1821 the Mexican government sold this mission to American citizens David Krieger and James Irvine. In 1848 Mexico ceded this land to the United States as a result of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. This treaty provided for the end of Mexican rule in California and divided most of modern-day Los Angeles County between the United States and Mexico. The land around La Quinta included some of today’s Riverside County and adjacent Ventura County. In 1852–5 José Antonio Alvarenga built a adobe house near what is now La Quinta while working on his claim to an rancho claimed by Manuel Nieto on October 20, 1849. He named it Callejon de la Paz (or Avenida de la Paz). Alvarenga ran into financial trouble shortly thereafter, so his wife Mina took over management of the property until her death in 1861; she bequeathed it to her son José Alvarenga García later that year. From 1865 until 1888 much of this chaparral was burned down by members of a cattle drive led by Captain John Tipton from Sutterville north through Orange County towards San Francisco Bay; their purpose is still unknown but may have been motivated by rivalry with Hispanic settlers seeking title to more fertile lands east of Fresno Street in downtown LA (see also: Rancho Cucamonga Massacre). In 1893rick Witherspoon bought part of what is now La Quinta from José Alvarenga García for $1 million dollars ($104 million current value). Witherspoon started building what are now known as Triton Oaks Reserve (nowLa Jolla Aquarium) on this land in 1902–3 after purchasing another piece from José Anacleto Garcia de las Casas y Luna on November 15, 1903 for $675 thousand dollars ($[124] million current value). On May 25th 1908 Witherspoon married Agnes Randolph Bourke at their home at 7390 Imperial Beach Boulevard (). They had two children: Anna Randolph Witherspoon Bourke (born December 11th 1909) and John Randolph Witherspoon Bourke (born January 16th 1912). Anna Randolph Bourke would become First Lady Of America during President George Bush's first term in office starting January 20th 2001 – October 19th 2001.. By marriage she also acquired US citizenship which gave her political power within Washington D.C.. After Mrs Bush's death many questions arose about who succeeded her as First Lady because no one could officially take up that position until Donald Trump announced he would succeed her on February 29th 2017
The La Quinta post office was established on February 15, 1873, and served the entire community of La Quinta. The first postmaster was A.C. Young. In 1907, the post office became a general store and continued to serve that function until it closed in 1936. In 1978, the town completed a $2 million project to upgrade its infrastructure including new streets, sidewalks, water systems and lighting. The project also included the construction of a new Post Office building which opened in 1980.
