The first European to visit La Quinta was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 2, 1542 while exploring San Francisco Bay. He named it "Nuestra Señora de la Concepción" (Our Lady of Conception). Spanish travelers found oil fields near present day La Quinta in 1874 and began drilling for oil there. The town was founded by John Sutter on November 30, 1876 as Sutterville after he purchased Rancho Santa Anita from Miguel Avilés y Ahumada who had sold it to José Joaquin Moraga. A post office called Nueva Esperanza was established at Nueva Esperanza on December 6, 1877; it changed its name to La Quinta on February 10, 1912. In 1916, during World War I, local farmers raised horses for cavalry units fighting in Europe; many of these horses were killed or spirited away when war ended and they could not be used for cavalry service again because their owners no longer owned them. On October 5, 1917 Jens Chrétien crashed his plane into a hill near las Palmas Airport while flying from Los Angeles back to Canada; all five passengers died except Chrétien himself who walked away with only cuts and bruises. This event would later become known as "The Crash". The town's population grew rapidly due to new oil production beginning in the early 1920s until 1929 when production began declining because of over-production followed by World War II which halted any new production growth until 1951 when deregulation led to increased production which continued through 1969 whenProduction peaked with 1 million barrels/day but then decreased gradually until 1999 when Production declined below 500 kb/day despite efforts by the company Tokega Petroleum Corporation to increase output following deregulation . Since 1999 layoffs have been common at Tokega Petroleum Corporation due to declines in sales from operations although increasing production has given some relief . In 2002-2003 two wells were drilled adjacent to each other producing up to 8 kb/day each but this proved unsuccessful so a well stimulation program was begun using water trickling downhole that finally produced 1mbar per day effective January 2005 however this stopped after 7 months due primarily due differences between casing pressure vs field pressure resistance causing blowouts that damaged equipment
