The La Verne Air Force Base was established in 1948 as a major bomber and early reconnaissance center. The base continued to grow during the Korean War, when it was enlarged to include a fighter squadron and an artillery range. In 1957, the LaVerne AFB became home to the United States Military Academy at West Point. The institution has since become one of Americas most prestigious schools, educating more than 2,000 cadres each year. During the Vietnam War, LaVerne AFB became one of the largest military installations in California. The USAF flew an estimated 350 missions over Southeast Asia that resulted in the death of more than 50 pilots and crew members. Following their service in Vietnam, many LaVerne AFB veterans returned home with new skills and opportunities for personal growth. Some went on to lead successful businesses or careers within their communities while others continue to serve our country through volunteerism or active duty services. Today, La Verne AFB is America’s largest airfield by landmass and serves as a vital hub for Unified Combatant Commands worldwide. Its assets include two runways (I-15/I-18) and three airfields: I-5/I-14; II-36/Aircraft Maintenance Annex; and III-2/Ground Control Site (GCS). With its expansive acres of open space – perfect for training exercises – La Verne AFB is also well known for its popular annual 5K race put on by the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC).

In 1915, the town was incorporated; it had a population of just 10 people when it was established. In 1920s developer Alfred Payson Wright developed two blocks east of downtown into an undeveloped agricultural area which he named "Wrightville." He hoped to create a new suburb for his workers but failed to find investors or receive enough zoning approvals from city leaders who felt that such development would reduce their control over downtown business district which they saw as necessary for economic stability. However, after World War II ended and demand for housing increased throughout Southern California, Wrightville became an important center for suburban growth within San Diego County; it boasted more than 20 businesses by 1960 and had a population exceeding 100200 people by 1990 despite having no streetlights or public transportation available until then
