The La Verne Army Depot was founded in 1911 as a branch of the California National Guard. The depot served as a storage and distribution center for military supplies, ammunition, and other equipment. In 1916, the depot was renamed Fort McDowell and became an active military post. In 1940, it became an armory and later houses the LaVerne Armory Museum. In 1945, the United States Military Academy at West Point moved to La Verne from New York City. The UAMS staff and students used the Depot to house their barracks until 1951 when they erected their own campus on land leased from the city of La Verne. The army continued to use the Depot until 1976 when it closed its doors permanently due to lack of appropriations. Today, portions of the Depot are still used by local police departments for storage purposes.

By 1920, LaVerne had a population of over 150 people and boasted an impressive infrastructure including a hospital, school system, library, post office, courthouse and several churches. However, by the early 21st century local economy had begun to decline due to increasing competition from neighboring cities and towns. Today only a few remnant buildings remain fromLa Verne's heyday as an industrial center.

By the late 1800s, La Verne had become one of the most prosperous communities in Northern California due to its strong economy and well-developed infrastructure. However, during World War II LaVerne struggled with wartime rationing which led to significant decline in local businesses. However, by 1945 laVerne had come back online as a thriving community with new businesses restored and resumed growth throughout the postwar period until recently when many struggling aspects of its economy have causedlaVernetoians increasing concern about their future stability
