In 1893, La Verne was founded as a small community on the now-defunct Rancho Santa Margarita. The town grew rapidly with the arrival of Mexican Americans in the late 1800s. In 1906, the California State Legislature passed Act 9 of that year which established military service in California as a means of providing manpower for state defense. The first soldiers arrived to serve in World War I and World War II. The La Verne Army Depot was opened in 1942 to support U.S.Army troops stationed in Southern California. After the war, it served as a storage and processing center forensenvironmental remediation projects throughout California’s Central Valley (Calabasas, Fresno, Bakersfield, Madera). The depot closed its doors in 1968 but is still remembered today for its role in helping to cleanup some of America’s most polluted areas during the post-war era.
La Verne is a small town in southern California, located about 25 miles north of Los Angeles. The population was 9,611 at the 2010 census. It is part of theLos Angeles metropolitan area. La Verne is known for its wine industry and as a center for growing grapes for red wine production. It also has casinos and golf courses located nearby. The first Europeans to visit LaVerne were Spanish missionaries in 1769-1770, who named it San José de la Frontera after their ship San Francisco passed through on their way from Mexico City to Santa Barbara County. The mission was abandoned by 1839, but settlement continued until 1851 when the railroad arrived and development stopped. In 1857, LaVerne was incorporated as a city under the jurisdiction of Mono County with 6smiths (four white men) as its first mayor and three other whites voting on councilmembers. In 1863, gold was discovered in the area and soon LaVerne had become an important mining community with several mines including: Potter Valley Gold Mine; Monterrey Mines; Allendale Mines; Silver Peak Mine; and Zuni Gold Mine which produced 235 ounces of gold from 1919 to 1925 mostly at Silver Peak Mine’s huge open-air shaft where workers could come down to 471 feet (146 meters) below ground each day during summer months! However, by 1926 all these mines were closed due to surface deterioration caused by heavy use and poor management techniques used by the operators over many years leading up to that point combined with increased competition from other mines in nearby Mono County Asbestos Mining District which began operating just south of LaVerne in 1923 #1 mine workings visible today on BLM land east of US 101 near Coyote Hills Open Space Preserve are associated with this period beginning around 1920 some 40 masonry retaining walls still extant above surface along side East Wing Sided Dark Chalcedony Creek Mineral Wells ending abruptly at intersection above surface 3 m deep running northeastward outwash ending overlying creek bottom 5 km wide

During World War II, LaVerne was a major manufacturing center for munitions production on the Peninsula; it produced more than any other city on California's Central Coast. The war also brought increased population density toLa Verne because of housing shortages caused by agriculture or military needs elsewhere on the peninsula. Since 2000, La Verne has been experiencing a revitalization process characterized by its growing creative community, nightlife scene and recent arrivals from both China and Latin America who have chosen this coastal town as their new home base while consolidating their businesses into one area: arts & culture."
In 1853, La Verne's first post office opened. In 1907, the city was incorporated as a town. The name of the town was changed to La Verne in 1914. In 1932, La Verne became an unincorporated community and in 1958 it was dissolved into the city of La Verne.
