The first coffee beans were grown on the site of what is now downtown La Verne. The popularity of coffee became so great that Doublingtree Coffee Company began importing beans from Europe in 1898. By 1912, La Verne had become the largest coffee producer in California. In 1927, Starbucks was founded in LaVerne and quickly became one of the most popular café businesses in America. In 1994, Starbucks Corporation merged with Dutch company Keurig Green Mountain Incorporated to form larger Keurig Brewing Co., which continues to produce high-quality coffee today. La Verne is a city in Californias San Bernardino County. The population was 20,636 at the 2010 census. La Verne was founded by Mexican Americans in 1875 as a landing on the now-defunct Rancho Niguel and named after Captain John C. Fremont for his participation in developing California's Central Valley. In 1876, the town became an agricultural community with two sawmills and four tanneries producing hides and leather from cattle, horses, pigs, buffalo and other animals used for market goods such as shoes, saddles, harnesses, wagons and sleighs. In 1881 La Verne incorporated as a city under the name of Villa Park. It became an independent municipality on February 3, 1904 when it amalgamated with El Monte to form the current City of LaVerne. The first post office was established in LaVerne on October 16, 1876 (the date is commemorated by a plaque at Municipal Hall). The first store opened in 1880 at 4th Street and Western Avenue; it closed down in 1902 because of lack of business opportunities. A larger store opened at 5th Street and Indian Ave., which continued until 1907 when it also closed due to lack of customers. The first fire department arrived in 1870 but did not become operational until 1875 because of financial difficulties caused by overspending on new equipment from Fort MacArthur's procurement program that had been initiated during World War I.
