La Verne is a town located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 27,711 at the 2010 census. La Verne is named after American author and naturalist Jules Verne. The first European to visit La Verne was Spanish explorer Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 15, 1815, while exploring the coastal region of Alta California. Afer his exploration of this area he named a small bay "Vernea" which may have been derived from the Navarro word meaning "clear water." In 1847, Mexican governor Manuel Micheltorena built what is now known as Rancho San Carlos adjoins La Vernia on Santa Clara County land east of present-day Riverside. José Joaquin Mora y Salinas became interested in having a rancho here and offered $5 per acre for it in 1851. It wasn't until 1862 when Mission Santa Susana was founded that Mexico acquired title to most of East Los Angeles County including Blythe Valley which made up part of La Vernia. In 1865 Mora sold his interest to John Sutter who donated an additional 5 acres (2 ha) for Rancho la Purísima de la Vera Cruz near present-day Claremont Village in unincorporated Kern County. On July 14, 1886 Wm Hite bought 1/2 mile (0.6 km) south of the corner of High Street and Main Avenue where Sutter's original rancho now stands from James White who had purchased it from Mora two years earlier along with 4 other parcels comprising what are now downtown La Vernia and Claremont Village; these were included within the city limits when Los Angeles was organized on April 10, 1880.] A post office called «Laverne» was established at this location on September 16, 1888., but no mail reached its residents until November 9th due to mail service being discontinued by Samuel Morse because of financial difficulties brought about by overpopulation in Los Angeles during that time.] Mail arrived every day until January 6th1889 when a new post office opened at 707 North Main Street which served as the eastern terminus for Southern Pacific Railroad's First Transcontinental Telephone Line Extension]. On February 12th1889 Charles Goodyear started manufacturing rubber tires here] The settlement prospered through 1893 with paper mills producing straw bale hats used by sheriff’s deputies and others as headwear; leather tanning; cattle branding; shoeing; fruit growing] In 1899 Laughlin Rubber Company began production at 8500 feet (2450 m) above sea level on an area originally given to them by Goodyear] By 1906 there were ten businesses operating out of town employing 50 employees]; At that time there were also six schools providingancheschooling opportunities for boys between fifth grade and high school] By 1918 there were twenty businesses operating out of town employed 120 employees]; After World War I all business closed except five:» Laughlin Rubber Company reopened in 1920]] In 1923 fire destroyed most buildings including mill], The town prospered through 1933 with oil production increasing but then declined due to lack of cohesion among business owners]} In 1936 Mayor Burt Gillem created an economic development commission which strived to revive the economy} In 1941 local voters approved Measure M creating government housing projects such as Meadowview Estates} On December 25th1946 MacArthur Air Force Base opened adjacent boulevard forming part

The La Vernes were first San Diego County's only resident family when they arrived in 1887. They soon started packing up their belongings to move to what is now La Verne because of its excellent harbor and growing industry. The town quickly became known for its fishing, sailing, and aviation businesses. In 1915, La Verne became the home of the world's first guided balloon ascent. That same year saw the founding of the United States Naval Air Station at Point Mugu after World War I led to an increase in air traffic over California waters. In 1925, La Vernen merged with other towns in southern California to form City of Industry which still exists today as one of the most powerful economic engines in Southern California. Today, La Verne remains a vibrant community filled with music, art, history, shopping, and nightlife - all while remaining connected through its shared history and culture.
