Fremont in 1847 as an agricultural community on the eastern slope of Mount Shasta. The first post office opened in 1850. Today, LaVerne is known for its wine industry and its beautiful downtown district which comprises both Old Town and the newer Discovery District neighborhoods.

In 1848, La Verne was founded by John W. West and his wife, Eliza Jane. The town was located on the extreme southern tip of California and was a small farming community with a population of only about 50 people. But within a few years, La Verne had become an important transportation center for the surrounding country due to its perfect location at the junction of two major wagon routes. In addition, it became an important manufacturing center for goods exported to China and other parts of Asia. Although La Verne had no official government until 1850 when it incorporated as a city under the name of "Vermont," it quickly became one of the most successful communities in California. By 1856, it had built up a large railroad system which connected it with other settlements in Southern California and Nevada. This allowed La Verne to become one of the leading centers in early American civilization. LaVerne also played an important role in shaping Californian society during its boom years between 1860-1870. It fostered industry, commerce, education and social reforms that helped spur economic growth throughout much of the state during this time period. In 1868, LaVerne even supported Proposition 32 which led to passage of The Land Act which granted land grants to various Anglo-American investors throughout California
