The Lafayette Air Force Station (LAFS) is a decommissioned United States Air Force station located in the city of Lafayette, California. It was active from 1947 to 1957. LAFS was the home of the first jet fighter squadron in the U.S., The 433rd Fighter Wing. The wing and its predecessors were activated at LAFS on 1 October 1947 under Second Lieutenant Clyde Crouch, Jr.. On 5 December 1949, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor resulting in America entering World War II. In 1951, The 433rd Fighter Wing transitioned to Boeing 727-123s and received their first jets; however they would only fly with them for two years before being replaced by Boeing 737-200s which continued flying until 1972 when they were reassigned back to LAFS as part of General Dynamics F-111 program. In 1976-1977, during Operation Neptune's Spear USAF deployed five squadrons: The 469th Tactical Airlift Squadron(TAS), 432nd Tactical Airlift Squadron(TAS), 436th Tactical Airlift Squadron(TAS), 446th Tactical Airlift Squadron(TAS) and 449th Tactical Airlift Squadron(TAS). These squadrons flew Lockheed A-12 Intruder aircraft providing airlift for troops stationed in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War. From 1978 to 1984 these same squadrons operated McDonnell Douglas MD-11Cs providing airlift for Marines stationed aboard amphibious assault ships deployments throughout Marine Corps homeland theater activities such as Grenada/Wetlands Invasion and Desert Storm Since itsactivation LAFS has been home to various Headquarters units including Eighth Air Force Headquarters (1947–1951), Third Air Division Headquarters (1952–1970), Seventh Air Force Headquarters (1970–1984), First Bombardment Wing Headquarters (1984–1987) and now Ninth Air Force headquarters which moved here from Seymour Johnson AFB North Carolina on 24 May 1987 after reactivating al fourth Strategic Missile Wing there since 8 July 1986 After closure of LAFS on 14 September 1987 by President Reagan citing budget reasons it reopened on 3 October 1988 under Third Air Division command with Fairchild Republic Fokker F27C "Eagle" bombers while also receiving new parts and equipment from other United States Army installations around the area including Goodyear Dyess AFB AZ where KC-135 Stratotankers had previously been based. However due to poor environmental conditions at Goodyear Dyess AFB along with several engine failures within six months it closed again effective 25 January 1990 having served its original 10 year lease period without any meaningful upgrades or improvements despite costing taxpayers over $100 million dollars . Today there are no operational USAF Base facilities left in California apart from Cheyenne Mountain AFB Colorado Springs Directors Quarters which is now used by Army Special Operations Command elements who have access to a small park adjacent to where it once sat

Lafayette is a small town in the San Joaquin Valley of California, United States. The population was 7,723 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1849 by Yankee settlers and named for General Lafayette who had fought in the American Revolutionary War. Lafayette is one of several French words meaning "river" or "stream" that are used to define portions of southern California. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lafayette were Franciscans travelling from Monterey to Stockton on the San Francisco Bay in 1821. Father Junipero Serra, with his brother Father Miguel Serrano, also took up land west of Sacramento and founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís (or Santa Cruz del Norte) on Rancho Rinconada in 1827. The mission was abandoned after only six months because of Native American resistance and hostility towards Catholic missionaries. In 1848, two years after Gold Rush fever had swept through California, Lafayette residents voted to incorporate as a village under the name Oficina de Oroville. On December 12, 1850 they adopted a resolution proclaiming themselves an autonomous parish within the Diocese of Merced with its own pastor and government headed by a board of trustees bearing three members from each township or community electoral district as set forth in Canon 3143 of the Catholic Church's Code Of Civil Procedure; this act makes Lafayette unique among Californian villages in having both municipal status and autonomy from any ecclesiastical authority whatsoever... In 1860 Revd Wm Noyes became pastor general for all Californias but left office when he opposed secession from Mexico City due to political differences over slavery... A new bishopric was erected at Fresno with Revd John Prewett installed as its first bishop on February 15,... On July 1st 1870 Fr Tomás Rivera Prado became vicar apostolic for all parts within Mexican America effective November 6th 1870... After Mexican independence came about there was much conflict over whether or not to recognize it especially since most people felt that Mexico should have been responsible for creating and maintaining law and order throughout its territory rather than being divided into competing jurisdictions controlled by priests/bishops appointed by Mexico City
