The Lafayette Army National Guard unit was organized on December 12th, 1863 in response to the California Gold Rush. The unit was first known as Company A of the 9th Infantry Regiment and served in numerous engagements including the Battle of Bear Valley and Battle of Wounded Knee. In 1864, Company A was redesignated as Company H and fought in the battle of Adobe Walls. In 1865, they were re-designated as Company I and fought at the Battle of Pea Ridge. They also served in the battle of Appomattox Court House. In 1866 they were redesignated again as Company K and participated in the siege of Petersburg. They disbanded on October 15th, 1867 due to lack of funding. On February 14th, 1886, a detachment from Company K from Lafayette traveled to San Francisco for a game against Santa Clara University’s football team which had just been founded that year. The game ended with Santa Clara prevailing 20-0 with touchdowns by Captain John Tompkins (K) & Corporal George Maunder (I).
