The Coast Guard has been in Lafayette, California since 1920. At that time, the town had a single lighthouse and no coast guard. In 1923, the first Coast Guard Station was built in Lafayette. The station was used to help patrol the coastline and maintain law and order. In 1969, the Coast Guard station in Lafayette was renamed Lighthouse Park. In 1984, a new station was built on land donated by the city of Lafayette. The new station is used to provide security for the local harbor and its surrounding area. Since 2000, when a state-of-the-art terminal opened at Lighthouse Park, Coast Guard personnel have been able to provide additional services such as search and rescue missions and recreational activities such as boating/water skiing/kayaking/sailing opportunities. Lafayette has always been a hub for maritime activity with its many dockside restaurants and businesses serving up fresh seafood from local sea bass to lobster bisque. There are also several small lakes located nearby which offer various fishing opportunities (eaglets can be found near Thousand Oaks Lake while bluegills can be found just south of downtown).

Lafayette, California is a small city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 3,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. The area that now makes up Lafayette was first populated by Native Americans and Missionaries in the 18th century. In 1858, following the Mexican–American War, General José Joaquín Cerón founded San Francisco de los Angeles Mission on land that would become Lafayette. Pioneer James Irvine settled here in 1859 after he discovered mountain gold near Sutter's Mill. A post office called Lafayette was established in 1865, and became a town on April 17 of that year when it incorporated as a village. The name "Lafayette" originated with General Don Carlos de la Raza who named it for his brother Louis-Jacques Lafitte (1763-1837), Comte de Lafayette (1785-1836). In 1882, local businessman Wm Haggerty donated land to build what would become Kern Valley High School; the school opened in 1904 and remains open today as one of the country's oldest comprehensive high schools. By 1900, about 60% of the workforce for Kern County were employed within 10 miles of our town boundaries;[1] this level continued until recently when job growth has shifted away from rural areas towards metropolitan ones around Los Angeles and Orange counties.[2] A fire destroyed much of downtown Lafayette on November 25th 1945 during an attack by Japanese forces during World War II which also left many buildings damaged or destroyed including: two blocks of original downtown buildings dating back to 1865; three churches - St John's Baptist Church (First Baptist), First Methodist Episcopal Church (main building) and Christmastime Chapel; barns surrounding Army Air Field 14B which housed troop planes used for bombardment missions against Japan; four brick warehouses built between 1905-1910 adjacent to Army Air Field 14B housing civilian contractor trailers used for storage purposes such as automobiles
