Lafayette is located on Interstate 10 east of Palm Springs and west of Victorville. Lafayette is part of the Victorville and Lancaster County Unified School District. The name Lafayette comes from French for "the white city." In 1848, when Mexico won its war with United States over Louisiana, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna decided to move his army from Veracruz tooterritorio Mexicano (Mexican Territory), where he founded what became known as Villa San José de las Palmas on January 17, 1848. Lafayette's first post office opened in 1851. The community was named after General Lafayette because he had given support to California during the Mexican-American War. On May 8, 1861, Confederate general Robert Ewell invaded and destroyed an unarmed U.S. military encampment near present-day Bernardino City while American forces were fighting for control over that area; this event is considered the beginning of the Californio Rebellion against federal rule in southern California. In1892, Lafayette organized a patriotic parade that traveled down Manchester Avenue which lined up along Indian Wells Road until it reached Spring Valley Cemetery before ending at Rincon Park across from Angels Stadiums football stadium
