Lafayette, California is a town in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 6,876 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lafayette was founded in 1851 by Captain James K. Polk and his wife Lucy Sloat Polk as a small post on the Butterfield Overland Stagecoach route from Sacramento to Stockton. The original town site was located near what is now downtown Lafayette and Campo Road. A settler named George Steuart built a few miles east of present day Lafayette about 1854. The first stores were established in this early community, which also served as an eastern terminus for stagecoaches travelling between Fresno and Stockton. A post office called Lafayette was established in 1868, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1902. The town site passed through several hands before being purchased by John Sutter in 1898 for $40 dollars ($ today). In 1903 Sutter donated land to build the current courthouse and jail complex on what is now First Street south of US Highway 99W (now US Highway 395W). Lafayette's earliest industries included tanning hides and split rails for wagon transportation; however these operations ceased around 1920 due to competition from new Interstate 5 construction nearby. By 1925 Lafayette had become known as "the Agricultural capital of Kern County". However, with the onset of World War II agricultural production began to decline leading to many mills closing down over time; however some still remain standing including Wernham Hogg Paper Mill which closed its doors in 1984 after 113 years of operation
