The Lafayette Marine Museum was founded in 1984 by Dr. Don Wirth, a marine biologist and curator of the California Maritime Museum. The museum is located on the waterfront in downtown Lafayette and features exhibits on maritime history from around the world.
Lafayette, California is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 66,814 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Northern California and one of the most populous cities in the United States. The area that would become Lafayette was first settled by Native Americans who called it "Ka-wah-tse" or "Place of Rocks". The first European to visit this area were two brothers, Pierre Topon and Joseph Bouchard, on their trip up the San Andreas Fault in 1769. They named their small settlement after General Lafayette, who had recently been wounded at Yorktown during the American Revolutionary War. A post office called Lafayette was established in 1847, and remained open until1893. The town took its name from General Lafayette when he visited for a brief time in 1852. A fire destroyed much of downtown Lafayette on July 4th, 1889; however, general storekeeps rebuilt and continued operations until 1923 when they merged with local stores to form what is now known as Pier One Shopping Center

Lafayette is a small town located in the Central Valley of California. The population was 6,591 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fresno-Salinas metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Lafayette were Spanish conquistadors in 1769. After some skirmishes and raiding, they realized that this region had potential as an English Colony. John Crespo, captain of the San Francisco Bay Company's ship "La Bodega", traveled upriver to explore this area in 1778 and noted that there were sizeable tracts of rich agricultural land hereabouts but no villages or towns. He recommended that Spanish colonists be sent overland from Mexico City because he thought it would be easier for them to connect with these new lands than by sailing downriver every few years like previous explorers had done. In 1846, Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Americans east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains to leave within 72 hours or face military force if they did not turn over their arms and property to the Mexican government. This order led to a huge exodus of Californians west of the mountains (the largest yet) which began on November 5th and continued until December 15th when Mexican General José Joaquín Mora Anza arrived in Yreka with 1,200 men and burned everything left behind including most of Sacramento County's stores and homes. This event also signaled Earth Day around which Lafayette began celebrating its various holiday events commemoration today such as their annual parade honoring local heroes from throughout history as well as their 4thof July fireworks show featuring large American flags flown from many roofs in downtown during summertime). Most people who lived near Yreka then went into hiding during those days since things seemed more serious than they could have imagined; however, about a third or so managed to escape unharmed into surrounding hills where they eventually started a successful farming community known today as(today's) Cabrillo National Monument just east of present day(Lafayette). Although Mexicans were later expelled from California for numerous reasons such as violence against American settlers, Independence War crimes etc., Lafayette remained an English settlement until 1849 when it became an unprotected United States territory after Mexico ceded it back following US victory in the war (see Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo). In 1850 Lafitteans voted overwhelmingly not to ratify this treaty since they felt much wealthier inside America while still having much control over their own region/community outside Mexico; nevertheless, Los Angeles took control over Lafayette completely effective February 28th 1850 due largely to this vote instead of any formal annexation process carried out by Ulysses S Grant which would have happened had Lafayette been annexed forcibly like other US territories.) From then on through World War II (1939-1945), Lafayette served occupation duty at Camp Alvarado across from San Bernardino until finally being surrendered on May 12th 1945 following orders from Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Area headquarters in Europe concerning postwar disposition issues within German-occupied Austria & Czechoslovakia.). Today both old buildings on Main Street are operated as private residences while Park Drive hosts several businesses including one restaurant serving locally sourced beef torito tacos!
