The Lafayette Naval Shipyard, located in the city of Lafayette, California was first established in 1916 as part of the Navy's growing Pacific Fleet. The yard was originally called the "Naval Repair and Research Station" and later renamed the "Lafayette Naval Shipyard." The shipyards were among America's largest yards during World War II and produced a wide range of naval vessels including submarines, destroyers, amphibious ships, and coastal artillery. In 1948, when California became an independent state, the Navy transferred its entire fleet to San Diego. At this time, the shipyards were managed by a joint venture between Lockheed Martin Corporation and General Dynamics Corporation. In 1975-1976, when Huntington Ingalls Industries merged with Raytheon Company (the parent company of LockheedMartin), both companies shared ownership of the shipyards which eventually reverted to General Dynamics Corporation. During this time period, many new warships were built at the shipyards including USS Yorktown (CVN-68) which was delivered in 1978 and is now on display at NAS Orange County in Newport Beach. Today there are over 100 naval vessels that reside at various stages of construction or maintenance at Lafayette Naval Shipyard. These vessels include submarines such as Virginia class subs nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), USS Coral Sea (LPD-15) which collided with another submarine off Japan in 2010 after months of testing; destroyer USS Dwight D Eisenhower (DDG-8) – one of only three American destroyers still operational dating back to World War II; amphibious ships such as LHDs Amphibious Assault Ships;CG(AW)-122 “Cherokee” Gunboat; LCS(L)-23 LCS frigate;and MH-60E Seahawk helicopters amongst others. Additionally, LAFAYETTE NATIONAL SHIPYARD has been home to numerous Coast Guard Cutter boats including CG(GC)-134 “Hercules” Helicopter Landing Craft Boat/Hunter Killer Squadron One hundred thirty four; CG(GC)-155 “Salt Lake City” Cutters HMF 56 & HMF 58 ; CG(GC)-161 “Cottonwood” Cutters HCG 21 & HCG 23 ; CG(GC)-165 “Olympic Hills” Cutters HCRD 31 & HCRD 33 ; HSLCP-(AGS)-1 replenishment tanker

The Lafayette Naval Air Station was founded in 1915 and during World War II it served as a base for the United States Navy's aircraft carrier fleet. The squadron also operated an airfield on the nearby city of El Monte. In 1954, the navy decommissioned its fleet of carriers and transferred their equipment to the Naval Air Station at Monterey, California. The station was closed in 1978 but reopened in 1984 as a naval air warfare center. It is now home to two squadrons of Hornets (VF-3), which are responsible for providing aerial refueling support for surface ships and submarines conducting operations in coastal waters throughout North America.
Lafayette, California is a small town located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 7,841 at the 2010 census. It is the location of the University of Southern California and several other colleges and universities. Lafayette also has a small business and manufacturing sector. The name Lafayette comes from French for "city on the maidenhair tree." The city was founded by Pierre-Simon LaFontaine in 1748 as part of Rancho San Bernardino de la Antigua y Tejon, which he purchased from Mission Santa Barbara de Asís. He named it after his friend General Charles-Jacques Lamarque who had won distinction during the Mexican War as commander of an army under General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna. In 1846, Lafayette became one of twelve townships formed into San Bernardino County when parts of Riverside County were split off from Los Angeles County. Lafayette experienced some growth during World War II when the United States military buildup in Southern California increased demand for goods produced in that area. However, this growth slowed down after 1945 due to overpopulation and economic decline in postwar years along with competition from nearby cities such as Anaheim and Riverside. In recent decades, however, Lafayette has seen a resurgence as a center for arts and sciences activity with strong ties to USC and other universities; its economy has become more diversified; and its infrastructure has been improved including new roads, parks, schools, businesses, and residences
