The Lafayette Naval Air Station was built in 1942 as a coastal air station. It became an aircraft carrier squadron, I-A (43), in 1946 and was redesignated V-2 (VP) on 1 Jan 1951. On 10 Jul 1955 it became an all navy airbase with F4U Banshee fighter jets when the US Navy transferred its last carriers to the Fleet Marine Forces from the Atlantic Fleet. The squadron become CVN(G)'s 3rd Aircraft maintenance Squadron on 15 Sep 1959, CVN(H)'s 5th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron on 30 Jun 1966 and CVN(J)'s 6th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron on 9 Apr 1970. The squadron changed its name to CVN(K) on 1 Mar 1981 and its colors to blue, white and gold effective 31 Dec 1990. On 21 Aug 1993 it became part of USS Enterprise Carrier Wing which moved from NAS Sacramento to NAS Fallon, Nevada after being decommissioned at NAS Orchard Park, New York City.
Lafayette, California is a small town located in Kern County, California. The population was 8,500 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bakersfield–Delaware–Riverside Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lafayette is located on the east bank of the Sacramento River and about 25 miles south of Bakersfield. The first Europeans to visit Lafayette were American soldiers who explored California in 1821. When they arrived, they named it "Palo Alto" because Palo Alto Hill had been sighted by them while walking through that area near San Francisco. Lafayette was founded in 1872 by John Cushing and his family as a citrus fruit packing and shipping center on Rancho adobado (now part of City of Salinas). The name Lafayette came from a French word meaning "splendid." Cushing's brother-in-law, Fenton Mudd, donated land for the community on which Lafayette now stands. In 1907, after years of planning and construction work by local citizens, Lafayette High School opened its doors to students. In 1954, when Kern County was merged into newly formed Los Angeles County, Lafayette became one of its many villages within LA County's new boundaries. It has since experienced rapid growth with almost 2 million residents over the last few decades; however much growth has occurred outside of town limits due to suburban sprawl around nearby cities such as Lancaster and Fullerton. Today there are over 100 businesses clustered around Main Street including several big box stores such as Macy's Department Store and JCPenney; several banks (QFC Bank being one notable exception); numerous restaurants including La pizzeria & Italian restaurant; several health clubs including Chapman Physical Therapy Center which features an indoor pool; three hotels - two Renaissance hotels opposite each other on Main Street (one recently renovated), plus Holiday Inn Express across from Convention Center; post office with over 150 mailboxes scattered throughout blocks near main street - some dating back to 1925!
