Laguna Beach is a community on the Orange County coast of Southern California. It is bordered by Huntington Beach to the south, Tustin to the east, Irvine to the north and Dana Point to the west. The name Laguna Beach comes from two bodies of water: Laguna SecaSpanish for "the salt sea," and La Jolla Cove Spanish for "the haven." The first Europeans to visit Laguna Beach were Captain Fortunato Menendez and his expedition in 1769. They named it Isla de la Palma because they thought it was an island. In 1876, while exploring what is now San Diego County, Commodore John Sloat discovered and mapped the Santa Lucia Islands off shore of Laguna Beach. In 1907, insurance agent Edward Condon opened a small store on High Street called Condon's Place. He soon made friends with local businessmen Haddon Barnes and Harry Chandler who would later help start Honda Motors Corporation in Torrance. In 1916, Barnes donated land at Broadway & Soquel for a park which became known as Golden Gate Park. During World War II, many people worked at Naval Air Station Miramar (later NAS Miramar) near present-day Laguna beach due to its proximity to Los Angeles harbor. The USS Illustrious docked there between 1942-1945 during World War II as part of Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to capture Japanese planning documents related to strategic bomber development
