It all began in 1922 when two men from Santa Cruz, California started a small grocery store on Doheny Boulevard. The first espresso machine was built in 1924 by Luigi Beccaria. Angelo Colombo, owner of The Coffee House on Main Street, used to bring his beans directly from Italy to local cafes and restaurants. In 1951, Donato Baretto opened his own roastery/café called La Gabbia. It was here thatertopped the quality of espresso beans imported from Italy for US consumers. The early pioneers who brought artisan coffee to Laguna Beach included Mr. Fenton (1927-2008), whose dream was to create a place where locals could enjoy high-quality coffee without leaving their homes or having to travel too far away. He championed quality over quantity in order to maintain a small scale production operation while also developing new methods and equipment for his coffee plantation which would later become world-renowned Dutch roasters like Cuvee Plantation and First Colony Coffee Company. Others who contributed greatly include Mr. Grillo (1945-2013) who operated the original donut shop on State College Boulevard; Mrs.(Patricia) Kuehn (1948-2002); Msgr.(Karen) D’Angelo (1952-present), an ordained nun who served as marketing director for St Joseph’s Parish; artist Monty Rios (brought professional espresso machines into the parish after purchasing one at a garage sale); Jerry Purdy (a carpenter by trade) ; Dick Smithson(1964-) now Director of Marketing forSt Joseph’s Parish Cemetery; Bob Osterlund(1969-) Owner ofOsterlund Family Farms near Perris; Louella Martinez(1972-)now Manager at La Rinconada Hotel & Casino Resort near Puente Hills; Reynaldo Sanchez(1976-) now President & CEO at SolarWorld Industries Inc.; Tom Tinglebaugh Jr.(1978-)now Vice President of Sales at Starbucks Coffee USA ;and many others including Manuel Gomez(1977-) now Executive Creative Director with adidas AG , David Millsap(1981-) General Manager - American Apparel Retail Stores - Macy's Department Store - Sears department store - JCPenney department store We are grateful for the continued support our friends provide us with generosity be it through giving money back into our farm hands or simply sharing their love of artisan coffee through social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook .
