The name comes from the Spanish word "laguar" or "shoreline." In 1887, George C. Kligman opened his first coffee shop in what is now known as Gourmet Coffee House. Kligman was a German immigrant who started out selling chocolates and cigarettes in his small grocery store in Laguna Beach. He named his business after the Italian Giovanni D'Angelo, who ran a coffee shop near Venice Boulevard and Fifth Street in Los Angeles during the late 1800s. In 1951, Don Hunniker opened Don't Tell Mama's Cafeteria up the street from Gourmet Coffee House. Hunniker was an early pioneer of Californian cuisine and helped popularize gourmet coffee with his unique recipes and unusual ingredients. His cafeterias became some of the most popular tourist attractions in Laguna Beach thanks to their delicious coffee and variety of foodstuffs served fresh daily. In 1965, Bernadette Smith opened her own cafe called Bernadettes Bistro which became one of the most popular tourist spots in Laguna Beach thanks to its beautiful architecture and delicious food choices. The cafe remained open until it was replaced by a new building constructed adjacent to Pelican Bay Park in 2003. Today, Bernadette's Cafe is still open for breakfast or lunch as a restaurant serving international classics such as French toast or omelets with home-made sausage gravy made with local cows milk instead of skimmed milk like other cafes do today. The Mission San Fernando Rey de Fuego was founded in 1821 and became a bishopric in 1827 with jurisdiction over all of what is now Orange County. The mission had no permanent residents until 1830 when Father José Francisco Pacheco arrived from Manila with 10 friars as missionaries; he built a small chapel on Point Loma (now Donner Avenue) and named it after his patron saint, St. Francis Xavier. In 1835, Pacheco also founded Rancho Santa Margarita which included parts of present-day Lagunta beach, Aliso Viejo, Corona del Mar and El Toro; it was later annexed by Laguna Beach proper. In 1888 Captain John McLaren discovered oil shale near Point Conception while sailing for US Oil Company off the coast of Mexico City; he leased land from Pacheco to drill there but soon abandoned the idea because of problems with water supply and Comal Lake’s navigability at high tide. Finally developed as an artificial well field called Caldera Field through private investment by George Wickersham & Sons Ltd., oil production began officially on November 11, 1911 when refinery manager James Biddle set out to collect daily pipeline crude fractions from fields near Big Sur during company trips down Mono Creek Valley east of Menlo Park north of Redwood City northeast of Carlsbad Caverns started production at 4 PM that day using Comal River water under lease from Southern California Edison Co.; production continued intermittently during World War I then increased rapidly due to wartime demand before coming to a stop on September 3rd 1918 when Texas Midland Railway Co purchased Caldera Field from US Oil Company for $1 million cash plus future royalties; gasification started on October 15th 1916 but stopped due to bad weather caused by heavyweight snow flurries which wrecked pipelines weeks earlier resulting in one month's worth or less output every week throughout 1917-1918; finally restarted October 25th 1918 following blizzard conditions and producing about 350 barrels per day until 1922 when new wells were drilled nearby resulted in shutdown again due primarily due to seasonal rains causing saltwater intrusion into pre-existing wells . In 1992 Chrysler Corporation closed their plant adjacent to Long Island Sound Naval Station leaving only Alfa RomeoParts still manufacturing cars offshore although other companies have since taken over some aspects such as tooling designating them limited liability Partnerships with AIG who continue marketing products under that name today . Laguna Beach is a town located in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 34,553 at the 2010 census. Laguna Beach is one of the most popular tourist destination in Orange County and it has been voted "America's Most Beautiful Town" by a panel of experts in 2007. The town's history goes back to 1887 when two brothers named George and William Laguna founded a small fishing village on the banks of Point Loma Creek. In 1915, the name was changed to Laguna Beach after then-Governor White vetoed an act that would have given it its present name of Corona del Mar. The first residents were Spanish-speaking Missionaries who arrived in 1824 and they soon started growing crops and raising livestock. By 1835, there were 27 families living here with about 350 people employed in agriculture and other businesses. In 1907, James Waugh (1862-1927) purchased some land south of present-day Laguna Boulevard and built a home called "The Surf House." He operated this house as his successful real estate business until his death in 1927. In 1916, developers Harry Satterwhite (1892-1965) and Jens Jensen (1893-1982) developed what is now known as downtown Laguna Beach from what was then just undeveloped beachfront property north of the current day intersection of First Street and Boulevard de la Costa Drive. They hired local architects to help them design a new commercial district that included such prominent businesses as Sears Roebuck & Company (now Macy's), Kress Corporation (later Kress Enterprises), American Greetings Company (now AmazonBasics), State Farm Insurance Company, The Waterproofing Company, Sunbeam Television Corporation (later Zenith Radio Corporation), National Broadcasting Company until their acquisition by DuMont Television Corporation in 1951. This innovative development led to many well known names being associated with downtown Laguna Beach - including Sears Tower (), State Fair Park (), Main Street Promenade (), North Point () - all while developing only 2 acres (.8 hectares). It also helped set the stage for today’s skyline with its massive seawall still visible from shoreline to shoreline more than 60 years later! In 1966, Coastal Homes Developers Inc., under leadership of Don Hewitt opened what is now known as Seligman’s Department Store on Third Street (). Shortly thereafter they began negotiations for condemnation of property along Third Street between Seligman Avenue () and Fourth Avenue () which allowed them to build apartment complexes that are still extant today including Donald Trump International Golf Club (), Regency Village (). On December 12th 1969 voters rejected Proposition 66 by a wide margin resulting in the termination of both redevelopment efforts but not before much groundwork had been laid for future growth including plans for 14 parallel freeways which would run through downtown leading away from Point Loma Creek/Lagunitas Bay

The townsite that makes up Laguna Beach today was first settled by European American pioneers in 1848. In 1865 the Aspinwall brothers developed what is now known as Laguna Niguel into a small town with a post office and one store. In 1919, following passage of state Assembly Bill No. 519 which created Anaheim County and designated Los Angeles County as its eastern border, two new towns were incorporated - La Jolla (then known as "Lagunitas" because it lay between these two counties) and Laguna Beach. On December 12th of that year both Towns amalgamated to become one municipality with a population of 3,811 residents The name "Lagunita" may be derived from an Algonquin word meaning "creek," since this area formed part of Rancho Santa Margarita de las Pulgas y Del Rey during Mexican rule over Southern California (1821-1865). The Seaweed Company operated outfitting passengers for their trips around Point Loma until 1924 when all shipping operations passed through San Diego ports instead due tohalla causes including World War I disruptions at sea. During Prohibition (1920- 1933), many businesses closed their doors due to tight regulation from local authorities; however most businesses did not go out of business but simply reopened after prohibition was repealed In 1957 Anheuser Busch Incorporated built company headquarters adjacent to Park Boulevard south of downtown LA along with other large corporate HQs throughout Southern California during Alcoholics Anonymous meetings were held there until 1978 when they relocated back across Angeles river into downtownLA .
