The town was initially named after Laja River which flowed through what is now downtown Laguna Beach. On December 5th, 1915Henry George Lerner submitted to the Board of Supervisors for approval a petition to change the name from Laja to Laguna Beach as part of an effort to attract more tourism to his new development. The first steps were taken to rename everything after him including streets such as Lerner Drive and George Lerner Boulevard within Laguna Beach proper. Even though he had originally envisaged only developing the beachside portion of Laguna Beach – bounded by State Street on the north side, Rincon Avenue on the south side and Black Diamond Road on the east side – Mr. Lerner soon realized that he had created a huge commercial center with ample room for expansion inland into what are now North Huntington Heights (then known as San Marino) and Silver Lake communities also located within today’s boundaries of Laguna Beach proper. So he quickly began purchasing land inland from his original beachfront developments so that he could build larger tracts still undeveloped today but accessible through dirt roads leading off State Street between Rincon Avenue and Black Diamond Road beyond Rincon Valley Park (the present day location for City Hall). To this day developers continue to purchase land adjacent both coasts defining today’s limits of Shoreline Drive east-westand Canyon Boulevard north-south while providing access roads & parkland along each border making it possible for residents (& visitors) today still enjoy properties close enoughto walk or bike but also far enough away not subjecting them to high traffic levels typical along coastal areas these days!
