The first military gift that Laguna Beach saw was in World War II when the United States Marine Corps set up shop in the town. In 1969, Laguna Beach hosted its very first Armistice Day celebration with over 50 different local organizations coming together to make donations to various causes. This event signaled a new era for Laguna Beach with its participation in local events and being Recognized as a Military Town by mayor Bob Kappelman. In 1992, then-Mayor David Hargrave announced that all City services would be available to active duty members of the US Armed Forces stationed at US Naval Base Ventura County (USNBVC). This made Laguna Beach one of the only communities within California that had this service level agreement with our government partner. As part of this agreement, every day during peacetime Mayor Hargrave received a delivery from USNBVC's Commanding Officer giving him access to all sorts of goodies! It was something special and definitely kept morale high during times of conflict or emergency. As time went on, things got even better for lagunabeach residents who were able to join forces with their federal government partners in order to support Operation Neptune's Spear which took place offshore in December 1993 – January 1994 resulting in many lives lost including those of several citizens appointed by Mayor Hargrave himself! With such an important history behind us, what could be next? In 2000, Mayor Hargrake announced he would be retiring after serving four terms and leaving behind an exciting future forlagunabeach residents who continue to contribute annually towards our local economy through fundraisers like Veterans' Day BBQs and Christmas Parties! What awaits us now? Well we can only wait and see…..

Laguna Beach is a beach town in Orange County, California. It is located on the Pacific Coast Highway and its ZIP Code is 92646. The population was 25,811 at the 2010 census. Laguna Beach's earliest recorded residents were Native Americans who lived along the San Andreas Fault in what is now known as Rancho Niguel. In 1875, John Sutter established a ranch there and named it after his brother-in-law, General Santa Anita (later Governor of California). The following year, Laguna Seca became a sex colony for American soldiers stationed in Northern California during World War I. After the war ended, many of these soldiers moved back to Laguna Beach and built homes there. The first post office opened in 1905; it was renamed Laguna Beach in 1915 after then-Governor of California Hiram Johnson hosted a luncheon at which he called for bids for the construction of a water system to be developed by himself and others. By 1925, however, development had lagged behind that envisioned by Johnson and various private interests bought up all or part of his landholdings until only two small parcels remained; one was sold to Robert Merrill in 1928 and the other went to Harry Chandler in 1933. However, due to economic instability brought on by World War II shortages of labor and materials throughout Los Angeles County combined with efforts by local officials to attract businesses such as airplane manufacturing plants to Laguna Beach (the original airport only served as an airfield), both areas rapidly lost population east of Interstate 5 through annexation by nearby communities during the 1950s (among them Irvine Spectrum Air Force Base). Development resumed vigorously around 1964 when LAGUNA BEACH INC., later known as Southern California Edison Company Limited Partnership purchased all remaining parcels from Merrill & Chandler with plans to build an electric line southward from here into Orange County parallel to Interstate 5

Laguna Beach is immediately south of Downtown Los Angeles and east of the San Gabriel Mountains. The first white person to set foot on what is now Laguna Beach was Spaniard José de Béjar who landed there in 1777 on his way from Monterey to Sonoma County. A mission founded by Franciscan missionaries in 1821 became known as Rancho Santa Margarita, and later Mission San Buenaventura (1828). In 1886, new land was purchased at the mouth of the Pacific Ocean from Esequiel Márquez for $5,000 by George Eastman and others who had invested in telephone companies founded by that man. The beach's name came about when one group of men found driftwood lying on the shore and called it "Lagunilla." At its peak during World War II, Laguna Beach had a population of over 100,000 people; however its population has gradually declined since then due to several factors such as suburbanization and more recently arrivals from outside Southern California.
