Laguna Beach's National Guard is one of the oldest and most well-known organizations in the city. The organization was established on May 1, 1917 as the Laguna Beach Municipal Guards. In 1923, it was renamed the California National Guard. The first unit to be stationed in Laguna Beach was Company B of the 9th Infantry Regiment, which arrived on October 15, 1924. Company B served until its disbandment in 1951. The present day Laguna Beach Municipal Guards were organized on February 14, 1959 under Order No. 557 from then Commanding Officer Major General Arthur J. Smith Jr., Commander of United States Army Pacific Reserve Forces (USARPAC)activated at Fort MacArthur Theater Yokosuka Japan . On July 1, 1962 our unit redesignated Company A Battalion 9th Infantry Regiment California National Guard units , now with Headquarters & Headquarters Detachment (HQHD), Camp Pendleton CA On November 10 1980 we moved from Camp Pendleton to their new facilities at 1701 East Commerce Street Suite 402 in downtown Laguna Beach " where they have been since ". Our new facility has an armory and storage area for about 100 vehicles including many armored cars and other types of military equipment ." A detachment also barracks at Vandenberg Air Force Base . In 1969 a gift from Mr. Gerry Sheehan made history when he donated a two-tone blue Cadillac Sedan Sportster to provide transportation for our guardsmen during uniformed drills and parades outside town squares throughout Orange County . This car continues to serve as pride and joy for our commando forces today! It can be seen around town during events such as summer concerts or special occasions like Veterans Day Parade!

The California National Guard was organized on December 14, 1849, in Monterey County. At its inception, the national guard consisted of 1,500 men and women. The first battalion was raised in San Francisco on January 15, 1850. On November 12, 1861, a bill was introduced in the United States Congress to recognize the state of California as a protectorate of the United States. On December 10th President Abraham Lincoln signed this act into law. The first unit of the California National Guard was despatched from San Francisco to Lodi on December 17th under command of Colonel John Hodge. In 1863 the 2nd Battalion (East Bay) CA National Guard was raised at Stockton and disbanded on October 16th due to lack of funds and recruiting efforts. The 3rd Battalion (Central Valley) CA National Guard was raised at Fresno however it too disbanded after only 6 months due to lack of funds and commitments from units located in that area. In 1865 two battalions were re-raised with increased funding called 1st Battalion (Pacific Coast) CA National Guard and 2nd Battalion (Salt Lake City) CA Nationalguard for service in Texas during Reconstruction

In addition to its traditional roles as a volunteer militia and reserve force, the National Guard also provides support for state and local governments through unit deployments, event management and disaster response. National Guard gifts have come from many different sources over the years. The first national guard gift was given by George Washington in 1792. After he was elected president, he ordered all states to send their militiamen into militias to help fight against Native Americans at the Battle of Bunker Hill. This was the first time that military forces were used together to fight on behalf of a state instead of being divided among each individual’s military forces. Throughout history, there have been several occasions when national guard gifts have been received by both private individuals and government entities. Some of these include: -In 1846, President Andrew Johnson sent 1,200 soldiery officers and men from Kentucky to help suppress a slave uprising led by John Caney; -In 1958, Congress passed legislation recognizing the National Guard as an integral part of the United States Army; -In 1992, President Bill Clinton awarded Guardsmen with honorary citizenship status; -And in 1998, Commander James Hormel presented Guardsmen with a ceremonial sword called “The Sword Of Peace” during ceremonies honoring America’s veterans service organizations (VSO).

Laguna Beach, California is a city in Orange County, California, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Huntington Beach Peninsula, between Newport Beach and Laguna Niguel. The city was founded in 1921 by William H. Laguna and his wife Alma (née Queen) Laguna as a small seaside town on the southern end of Huntington Beach Boulevard. The name "Laguna" comes from Rancho La Costa del Tiburon, which lay just to the west of present-day Laguna Beach on Isla Santa Margarita. As early as 1892, when Captain John C. Fenton recommended that heirs of Mexican land near Dana Point sell their holdings for $1 an acre to white men, some 20 such buyers arrived in Los Angeles from all over Southern California - among them Drury Lane Hotel owner James Irvine and Rear Admiral George Dewey - eager to find sites for summer homes because of increasing commercial interests adjacent to San Diego Bay. The first house built in what would become Laguna Beach was erected by Mrs. Fenton on 16 August 1921; it still stands today at 9th Street and Harbor Drive SW corner of Dana Point Boulevard: her home now used as a hotel guest room/sideboard suite with views of the bay across Pier 1 & 2 & its====== view tower! A year later, Laguna's first post office opened with mail received from Huntington Beach via horse drawn carriage from downtown LAPO president Wm Sutter's office on 5 May 1922; this building still stands today at 9th Street and Harbor Drive SW corner of Dana Point Boulevard: US Post Office #948! In 1923–24 there were only two residents – Mrs Fenton (who lived upstairs) & Mrs Cook ( downstairs). In 1925–26 3 residents were added: Harry Sharp who owned 4 acres north east of where Main Street meets 8th Avenue [just south side (east)of present day Third Street], Ada Cook who rented an old schoolhouse at 137 E 8th Ave NW [now part Of City Library], & Mildred Whitehead who leased land east of Main Street between First and Second Streets NW [now part Of City Hall]. In 1926–27 Captain Averill Harriman donated 500 feet longitude chain link fence along entire eastern border of beach front property line donating it outright or sharing 50% ownership with future Mayor Don Yeoman - Harriman had been personal friend (& predecessor to LA Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa) since World War I! Harriman also contributed 100 yards wide concrete walkwayPATH connecting southwestern end(southeast corner)of beachfront property line w/ local YMCA facilities on opposite shoreline...the intent being that visitors arriving via yacht or motorboat should be able to disembark immediately adjacent YMCA lot before walking PATH back into ocean’s edge!
