Laguna Beach is a secluded town located in Orange County, California. The population was 22,895 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. Laguna Beach began as an agricultural community established in 1881 by Captain John Waddell and his wife Eliza Calkins on Rancho Laguna de las Palmas. In 1892, Captain John Waddell's son-in-law, Frederick Law Olmsted, purchased the land from Captain John Waddell for $5,000 and started to develop it into a resort town with then-ubiquitously large ocean views. In 1915, Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) bought all of Olmsted's shares in the company for $210 million and renamed it PG&E National City. In 1926, when PG&E merged with Southern California Edison Company (SCE), Laguna Beach became one of its subsidiaries. The post office opened in 1924 and was known as "Laguna". The first hotel built in Laguna was the Brown Palace Hotel which burned down in 1928 but was rebuilt soon afterwards under new management as the Continental Club House . The last major development until after World War II was the construction of Playa del Carmen beachfront luxury hotels which replaced much of what had been developed prior to 1942 when Pearl Harbor happened which disrupted travel across America so much that most resorts chose not to operate during that time frame instead closing up shop for good. A number of small businesses were founded during this time including: A & P Supermarket (now Albertsons), Flamingo restaurant (now Red Lobster), Joe's Pizza Place (later Joes Garden), Garnet Drugs Store and hardware store (now Home Depot). During WWII there were a number of military installations nearby such as Camp Pendleton et al.: UDT Training Area east of town on Tanque Verde Creek; Marine Barracks west side on Oyster Bay Rd., now home to East Village Naval Base; Signal Hill east side on Cayuga Ave.; Fort Irwin northwest corner on Topanga Canyon Rd.; also MacArthur Park between Indian Wells Rd./Oyster Bay Rd./Seminyak Rd., now home to Don Pedro Reservoir Playground
